flat belly: diet or exercise?

I would kill for a flat belly!! I've been on a deficit for almost a year prior to using mfp. I've lost 40 pounds.and I'm looking real thin except for the pooch! How can I get rid of it or at least make it smaller/flatter? I hate that I look good and lean evywhere except there! Is it a diet related problem where I should keep with the deficit or will excersise get rid of it? I've been walking 3 days a week for an hour and strength train 2-3 days a week (squats with 75 pounds, deadlift 75) and sometimes if I feel up to it I'll do a jillian michael level on the 30 day shred. Will I eventually get there?

Keep eating at a deficit and lifting heavy you'll get there eventually. I know that for me, when I went higher protein/lower fat, my belly got a lot flatter and even got my six pack to start showing.
Also, how big is your deficit? It sounds like you're pretty fit everywhere else, you might want to consider upping you calorie intake.0 -
diet. Cut out sugar- including fake and "natural" sugars- and alcohol.0

No - not this. You can not spot lose fat and diet has nothing to do with where you lose weight. Continue to eat at a calorie deficit. Start heavy lifting, make sure your macros are correct, and you'll get there. It takes time. Heavy lifting is a good way to get your body recomposition rolling.0 -
Have you verified it's not diastasis?0

I would also suggest upping your calories slightly.
I couldn't get a legit 6 pack until I put on about 15 lbs of muscle.0 -

Solid first post.
No reason to do this unless you are gluten intolerant.0 -

This is only a good idea if OP has gotten her body fat down to about 15% and is now ready to start a solid heavy lifting program along with the increase in calories, which should be done with the appropriate increase in protein intake.0 -

Perhaps you should verify whether OP has had children before asking this question, as it's a pretty rare condition in the general population.0 -

I have a son who is now five and I had him naturally (vaginal) does that have an impact with whether I'll ever get a flat tummy? I don't want a six pack to the above post, but thanks anyways0 -
I weigh 115 but am petite and small framed (5'0) my mom says that the woman in our family never get a flat belly especially after having children, and says that no matter what some people may never have one. Unless I get a surgery which I'm terrified of.0

I've have two children (they are both adults now) and my skin did get stretched out from them. I had to get down to 15% body fat, start lifting and do isometric counter pushups to do it, but my belly is now pretty flat. Most women will have a small belly after having a baby but it is possible to get it fairly flat with a lot of work.0

A flat stomach is a byproduct of having low enough bodyfat accumulation around the trunk to not cause spill over.
Want a flat stomach? Keep losing body fat. That simple.
Bodyfat is incredibly deceptive. I think most people would be shocked at how much is still hanging around on, and inside, even a relatively lean individual.
For me, I'm genetically predisposed to carry a disproportionate amount of fat in my stomach area, more so than even a typical man. I don't have a traditional potbelly, because my area is made up mostly of soft subcutaneous fat, and not the visceral fat of hard, round bellies, but I still carry a LOT there. I have to get down much lower on the scale than most people who see me with clothes on would ever dream in order to have a truly flat stomach. At my current weight you can't tell in the right clothes, and holding the stomach in a little, but there is still so much there. I've been at weights that plenty of other men have seen a flat stomach at, and nope, I still have to go lower to get lean in that area. Just genetics.0 -

Nice...for many of us, that last one is the most important. Patience...pls give me patience...but hurry!0 -

This. The only thing you have to cut out of your diet are excess calories. Eat at a deficit and get in some exercise (I'm biased toward heavy lifting, myself).0 -
I have been doing everything you suggested for a year and its still not flat0 -

Then you are either missing #5 or you aren't being accurate calorie counting. If you are 100% accurate and log every thing you eat down to the gram you are eating too much. I can't see your food diary, so I can't help you. I'm willing to guess you aren't being accurate. Weigh everything. Weigh your fruit, vegetables, meats and nuts. Weigh your sauces especially nut butters. You can't pick where it comes off of, so you might be losing fat in other places (like around organs or arms or legs or back).
(5. Patience! It is not going to happen overnight. If you stick with it you could lose around 1% body fat a month. We aren't going to be perfect all the time. Enjoy birthdays and holidays. It is life and things will happen. Don't stress, learn to love the process.)0
