Heart rate monitor calorie burn ?

I recently received a polar ft4 monitor for Mother's Day. I love it btw! I used it all afternoon while I was rotatilling and planting my garden. I spent about 330 minutes in the garden and my monitor tells me that I burned 1500 calories! Is this really accurate? I won't eat back that many calories, but I'm just wondering could that really be true or is there some kind of a glitch? Last night I went for a 40 min run and it told me I burned 491 calories which I totally believe. It just seems really unreal that I could burn 1500 today. Thoughts?

HRMs are only accurate for certain activities where a relationship between heart rate and caloric burn is established ... steady state cardio activities such as running, cycling, swimming, etc. Lifting, gardening, sitting around do not have those established relationships so the formulae used by the HRMs produce inaccurate calculations.
