Often after a good session at the gym I wake up the next day unable to move which I've been told is because I don't eat enough protein. Would a shake before bed help with my aches? Or do I have to consume some protein within an hour of my workout

I would make sure you're getting adequate protein for the day, timing is really of no relevance for the common person. Also, enough rest and water. Remember rest days are just as important as your work out days for recovery0
