What to eat when you can't eat?

I think I might be allergic to Tofu. That or I caused an explosive chemical reaction.

Back in January I made what I call "Superfoods Cheesecake." I used reduced fat cream cheese, organic tofu, Greek yogurt, eggs, cocoa, raspberries and stevia. I was also eating about 35 grams of fiber a day including Fiber One bars. I had such horrible gut pain that I went to the emergency room for appendicitis. Several thousands of dollars later, multiple tests, suspicion of Crohn's Disease and a month later, they found nothing wrong.

Last week I made the cheese cake again with internal explosive results. Waiting for whatever is in my guts to go away, I can't eat dairy. I can't eat fatty foods. I can't eat acidic foods. I can't eat fiber. What can I eat that won't up carb cravings?

I can't eat 1250 calories in chicken soup.

I am sorry that happened to you. I am allergic to sugar alcohols (maltitol, Sorbital, Manitol, Xylitol are just some of the names), which are in Fiber One bars, and cause the exact same results. It's in almost every "low carb" or reduced sugar processed sweet, including gum and some beverages. You may want to check the ingredients on the packaged products (ALL of them) that you eat. It's usually noted in the net carbs or nutrition label.

I don't eat any packaged food any more. Problem solved.

    Hope you find relief soon.

Yeah, I had to give up the Fiber One bars.

I make all my own food. I just wonder if the fermentation of tofu along with the active ingredient in yogurt causes a chemical reaction.

I feel your pain, literally. Popcorn, raw vegetables, strawberries, vinegar products, diet coke, would cause me to experience gut issues. Several thousands dollars later, hundreds of test run, being blown off by one GI, I get diagnosed with Hypogonadism, Reactive Hypo, possible Cushing's, and Crohn's.

I felt like crap while these docs tried to find something to work. After pleading with the docs for antibotics, after showing them an article about SIBO, I was literally back to my old self in two days. Seeing a 2nd GI to confirm the diagnoses of Crohn's and make sure it wasn't some back GI infection.

SCD diet and sticking to low FODMAP foods was a godsend while the tests were run. Ground meat, riped bananas, boiled oatmeal, white rice, cooked carrots, cooked prunes, olive oil, olives, and lots of eggs.

Thanks, I'll Google all those terms.

I tell you, after the first time, I ate foods I haven't eaten in 10 years, like white rice and white bread. This time I ate bananas and that got my sugar cravings back in gear. I'm glad to hear the eggs worked for you. I sure haven't been getting enough protein lately.

I know your pain. I keep white macaroni around the house for those days. I find I can have peas with it, or a bit of sweet potato.

Rice, Eggs and Bread is the only way. Just lower your quantities you will be fine. Carbs are not bad.

Thank you everyone for your help. I haven't even eaten 500 calories today and its 8:00 pm. Just thinking about food makes me run to the bathroom.

Could be the cream cheese and Greek yogurt as well. That's a lot of dairy. Since you've had testing done, it sounds like you may just be lactose intolerant. One question though… did you have a colonoscopy and endoscopy?

I have Crohn's, therefore, I know what it's like to not be able to eat much. I eat gluten free and mostly dairy free (with the exception of greek yogurt once in a while). I have severe acid reflux and cannot eat acidic foods.

My diet consists mainly of gluten free steel cut oats, flaxseeds, bananas (lots of them), berries, brown rice, asparagus, mushrooms, carrots (in small amounts), avocados, turkey burgers, plain grilled chicken, salmon, rice cakes, cashews, pistachios, sunflower seeds, almonds, sweet potatoes, white/red potatoes.

I don't eat cookies, cake, cupcakes, muffins, cheesecake, chips (except reduced fat tortilla), no fast food, no frozen dinners, etc. No alcohol, no chocolate, no tomatoes, no coffee.

Stick to oatmeal, bananas, brown rice, plain meat (red meat is harder on digestive system), rice cakes, potatoes, soup, crackers.

To get your daily serving of veggies, try juicing.

Like any kind of fiber whatsoever?

So the fiber from leafy greens like lettuce, cabbage, spinach, kale will also cause the same issues as fiber from wheats and grains? =\

    If so, I got nuthin.

Im not limited by my digestion, but I am limited by what I like, what fits my goals, and how much the stuff costs so I pretty much eat the same stuff all the time. Chicken being one of them. But I get it, you dont want 1250 cals in chicken. I dont either!

But again if it were me I would try a lot of leafy greens, are tomatoes too acidic? I thnk they might be for you? Cucumbers (basic salad fixings) and make the center of each salad the main protein source.....salmon, ham, lean roast beef, turkey, boiled eggs, nuts and avacados. (are any of these things off your menu?)

After a couple weeks last time I was slowly able to eat normally again. It's almost like having the flu. What kills me is I'm gaining weight at insufficient calorie levels probably because of stress and lack of a good night's sleep.

Basically I'm on an involuntary cleanse. I am trying to get my vitamins and nutrients from essentially juicing/soup.

Have you had a colonoscopy and endoscopy?

    What about stool tests?

Soo... what you just described sounds like what happens to me when I eat too much dairy with high levels of lactose. However, yogurt and cream cheese (both fairly low) rarely bother me. But I get this weird burning sensation and then the cramping and then I'm in the bathroom with the sweats. It is NOT pretty. But it never lasts long. Only one really bad day and then a day or two of extreme lethargy that yes, is almost flu like. So, it makes me wonder if it is indeed a food allergy. I would for sure talk to your doc about testing for a soy allergy or a lactose intolerance and get this solved. Then move on to more stringent testing should that fail. Good luck to you -- I know how awful it feels and I hope you get to feeling better soon!

I had an MRI immediately and a barium X-ray two weeks later. The 2" swollen intestine was completely normal for the 4-hour long X-ray procedure. I also had genetic testing done for Crohn's. Based on last time, it's temporary.

I eat cheese all the time and the only difference was the tofu. I didn't even eat that much of it.
