swimming for weightloss and toning

Been using MFP for the past 2 months and have lost 20+lbs still have 13 to go to be healthy BMI. Swim 60 -80 min at least 5 mornings a week using breast or back stroke. I have found it helpful to know that I can eat back the "earned " exercise calories.

OK question for all the resident experts - is there a more accurate way of calculating calorie burn from swimming? as my hour of moderate pace swimming gives me over 600kcal extra - I don't tend to eat them all back, but I do have a 2nd breakfast as the hunger pangs are too much to bear till lunchtime. Apologies if this is a repeat of another thread

Try eating back only 50% or 75% of your exercise calories.

Someone told me that one of the reasons you are so hungry after swimming is that the cold water makes you hungry, try sitting in the hot tub or sauna for a few minutes after swimming to warm your body up.

As far as I know using a heart rate monitor is inaccurate for calculating calories burned in the water (has something to do with the water interrupting the continuous single to the heart rate monitor so it would be inaccurate), but some people use it.

Also a HRM should only be used for steady state cardio, and depending if you take breaks while swimming it is not steady state.
