Getting Started Again

Well, I had some sucess the first year and a half on this site. I lost around 130 lbs and was doing great. Then the arthritis in my hips flared up really bad, it got to the point to where I was in pain all the time hardly sleeping and couldn't even tie my own shoes. I was able (finally) to see an orthopedic doctor and the news was bad, I have to have bilateral hip replacements, the cartlidge in both of my hips completely degenerated. Keep in mind that I am only 36, this was a harsh reality for me. After talking with my doctor we decieded to try cortizone shots and physical therapy along with a new anti inflammatory to try and put off surgery. Needless to say, with lack of ability to exercise and depression (which I just ate all my feelings) I gained back around 30 lbs. I got the cortizone shot in each hip, and with physical therapy I am doing well. The pain is more managable and sometimes I am even almost pain-free, I can tie my shoes and get back to the activites I love (most of all swimming). I have a new outlook on things and I am ready to get back on track and start back on my weight loss journy. I know surgery is in my future, but I want to be as healthy and strong as I can be! Just looking for some new support as I continue on :)

You have done so well already 100lbs is alot.

Sorry to hear about your hip problems, I have slipped discs and it's doesn't even compare to what you have gone through but I know about not being able to exercise and the dark hole you can fall into.

Good luck on the next part of your journey.

  • I know how it can be difficult to exercise. I have very bad knees, most likely from all the running I used to do and I have inherited arthritis from my mom's side of the family. I have arthrovisc shots in my knees every six months to help with pain and movement. I have knee replacement surgery in my future, but I am too trying to hold that off. I need to lose 35 lbs that I have put on in the last 5 years. I started this journey this week and I am trying really hard to log the food and get 30 minutes of exercise at least 3 days/week. I walk outside, ride a bike and do weights at the gym I belong to. I know it is a lifetime change so, I am finally ready to do this. These boards are great for motivation and to hear the same type of difficulties from others that I am having. You can do this!
