1,200 and going nuts

I know people are saying that it's okay to overeat of the carbs and sugars as long as proteins are ok but my carbs are so insanely over even though I am under my calories and I am beyond starving atm even though it's 1930

When people say it's ok to go over on carbs if you're still under calories, they're speaking strictly in terms of burning calories. If you're at a caloric deficit, you're at a caloric deficit regardless of where those calories came from.

Hunger is a different story altogether. You may have to play around with a balance that keeps you sated. Some people suggest more protein, more fat, and/or more fiber to help curb cravings. I can only speak for myself, but I find that fat and fiber help most, with increased protein making only a slight dent in my hunger. I still try to get enough protein because I lift weights, and I'd like to help maintain my muscle mass while I lose, but the fat and fiber help me more with hunger.

Keep in mind that 1200 calories is low for most people and if you've been staying consistently below then your body might be trying to tell you to eat more for a reason.

I don't know your stats, so I can't say if 1200 is a good goal for you. But you might consider recalculating your goal to make sure it's right for you.

Of course you are hungry........1200 is as low as MFP will go. It may be too low for you. I looked at your diary and you are UNDER in both protein & fats for the past few days.

Protein, fat, and fiber all help you stay full longer. Think of your protein goal as a minimum......you want to meet it....not stay under. It's ok to be over in fat too. Dietary fats are essential to absorb vitamins, help your skin, hair, nails, etc.

Focus on getting more protein. Add some healthy fats here and thers.....nuts, nut butters, olive oil, avocado.
  • What exactly are you eating? I can tell you that if you're struggling to eat 1200 calories, that's not good. If you're not eating enough, your metabolism slows down, which will not help your weight loss at all. Are you eating every 3-4 hours? 5-6 small meals a day rather than 3 large ones? I try to get a decent sized breakfast since that truly is the most important meal of the day, a snack of carbs and protein, lunch, another snack of carbs and protein, then dinner. If you're eating like that, you shouldn't be hungry.

I'd say if you're truly serious about losing weight, but you aren't seeing any results, you should consult a nutritionist about the actual amount of calories you should be eating, and don't use what the website gives. A nutritionist can also break down the carbs/protein/fat ratio to better suit your needs. You can then manually input that data into your profile to continue to track your intake.

    Good luck!

    3 things:

    1. Don't eat just 1200 calories. Just don't. I'm a female, 5'2" and 129 lbs. I typically consume around 1400 calories. 1200 usually makes me feel lightheaded, and I'm sure it's not doing me any good. If you want to speed up your weight loss, lift weights and/or do more cardio. Even 15 minutes of squats, pushups, etc will make a huge difference.

    2. As EvanKeel mentioned, more protein will make you feel fuller for longer. I can usually eat a salad with chicken or tuna for lunch and feel perfectly full. It doesn't really look like you have much in the way of just a pure protein source. (chicken breast, fish, etc)

    3. I don't know about you, but carbs make me feel waaaay bloated. I could eat a whole bagel for breakfast and look like I'm pregnant by the afternoon. It's awful. Smaller amounts don't do that to me. If I eat more protein, on the other hand, I tend to look leaner even if I'm the same weight on the scales.

Okay as someone else said 1200 is the lowest MFP will go, and I just took a look at your diary and you aren't even eating that you are eating around 1000-1100 a day. 1200 already has a deficit built in so you should not be eating lower than this. I couldn't tell are you exercising and if so are you eating these calories back because you should be. How did you set your goal, did you say you want to lose 2lbs a week? It should only be set to this if you have a significant amount of weight to lose like me and even my calorie goal is set to higher than this.

Try eating a little more and see how it goes.

With 10kg (22lb) to lose, a goal of 1/2 to 1 pound per week is most reasonable. If you've chosen 1.5 or 2 pound per week, that's going to create too high of a calorie deficit and make this process very tough. Also, make sure your activity level is set correctly. Most people go with sedentary but maybe lightly active is more reasonable if you're moving around quite a bit in your off time.

I went back over the last few days of your diary and see you tend to go over your carbs and bit and are under in the protein and fat category. While it's true you can lose weight eating pretty much whatever you choose as long as you have a calorie deficit - how you feel (aka hunger) at that calorie level can have more to do with what you eat. Try to get more protein and fat in your diet. Add some lean meats to your meals and use olive oil in dressings and cooking.
  • Hey,

Thank you all for your posts. I have just calculated how many calories I should be eating and it is saying: 1500

This is going to sound silly, but something that high, kind of worries me due to many failed weight loss attempts.

I do update my exercise, but if i eat a cereal bar the same day I don't usually include it >.<
