Pet Peeve..."loosing" vs "losing"

Okay, it might be the teacher in me BUT...i have to share one of my pet peeves on this website. People often post comments about "losing" weight (as in the number on the scale is going down). However, they use the word "loosing" which is not a word at all! "Loose" is the opposite of tight. "Lose" is the opposite of gain. I don't think any of us is striving to be "loose" (ha, ha), but we all want to "lose." Just had to get this out of my system. Thx!

*applause* Seriously, all the grammar mistakes I see can be irritating at times. But for this particular "type" of website, "loose" vs. "lose" is definitely a huge faux pas. LOL

You are not alone. There have been several other posts on here already with vented frustrations about the differences between loose/lose, there/they're/their, except/accept, your/you're, quit/quite/quiet, etc.

It bugs me too. Unless I think about loosening my clothes! :) Wait, did that sound bad? ;)
  • Finally someone said it. Thank you!!

I have a problem with that as well, but it's going to happen as its a message board.

My biggest pet peeves here are people spewing off wrong advice. Muscle DOES NOT weigh more than fat

This topic has come up so many times, and it usually ends up with someone getting mad and/or insulted.

Amazing:yawn: with all the issues in this entire world going on, one could be overly concerned with loose vs. lose.

Pretty sad when you think about it...:frown:

I was once a copy-editor for a newspaper and kind of a hard-*kitten* about proper spelling and (at least readable) grammar, but now-a-days I just go with the flow. It's too much of a bother to remind every single person who comes here trying to loose weight that they're actually trying to lose that weight, let alone getting worked up over it. But I do feel your pain.

I totally agree. We all make typos, but bad grammar/word misuse drive me NUTS. Think about it. The only thing people see of us on websites is how we write. You could be the most intelligent person on the planet, but if you spell and construct sentences like and epileptic chimpanzee, you look like a moron. If you know you're not good with spelling and grammar, run it through a spell checker or TRUST your browser's auto-correct feature.
