Does anyone else use Flaxseed in their diet? It's been recommended by my cardiologist and he gave me a sample of Hodgson Mills Flaxseed to sprinkle on my foods, but I haven't so far. I'm wondering if it will alter the taste any. Of course he told me it wouldn't, but I'd like to get your opinions! He even suggested sprinkling it on drinks.

My mom used it in her breakfast smoothies or mixed in yogurt and her cholesterol went from 189 to 127. It's really good for cardiovascular health. I mix it into yogurt and the only thing I noticed was a difference in texture.

A friend of mine puts flaxseed in her drinks 3 times a day. She told me it tastes like dirt lol, but it keeps her really regular as she has problems with IBS. She said it will definitely keep your bowls moving. I haven't tasted it so far, but I plan on buying some flaxseed.

I put flaxseed in our breakfast smoothies, about 1tbs. per 8-10 0z. smoothie. Also add a quarter of cup to most quick breads and cookies that I make. Supposed to taste nutty, I can't really taste the difference and my husband who is very picky, never even notices it!

I bought flaxseed and it has a nutty taste but sometimes can have a texture of grittiness when added to certain foods. Put it with oatmeal and its great. I tried it in a smoothie and got the gritty taste. It is really good for you and it will help keep you regular as well!
  • Oh, no! I do NOT need to be anymore regular. But...then again, I do need to eliminate the need for these pesky pills. Save health and Save Money. It's a win/win! I want to lower my cholesterol naturally and they took me off the medicine while we're trying to conceive. Still taking the blood pressure meds though. At 33, I am officially a golden girl. Working on becoming a recharged whippersnapper again though! Thanks for all your input! I'll use it tonight!

I put some in my smoothie every morning. It's not unpleasant at all. Really sort of nutty.

I would put it in a salad or oatmeal. Kind of like toasted sesame seeds.

I use both the whole seed (like the added texture) and the ground (better way to make it usable by the body). I wouldnt sprinkle it on a drink, but I do use it in my oatmeal every day, I also mix it into my sons pancake mix and hide it in other foods for both of us (shh...dont give away my secret!)

I like the nutty flavor too. You could easily mix it in lots of stuff and never notice it except you can see the little ground up flecks.
  • I just bought my first bag of flaxseed today! I have heard it was good for me, but I didn't really know what to do with it. Thanks for all the ideas! I do have a question though... is regular flaxseed the same as Golden Flaxseed, besides the color? I bought the golded. They also sold ground flaxseed. That seems like it might be better in smoothies due to the texture.

The kind I have is ground.

I use flaxseed ALL THE TIME  I put the ground in my smoothies and baked goods. Plus as a vegetarian, I don't use eggs when baking, I found out that 1 tbsp of ground flaxseed + 3 tbsp of water = 1 egg. I sprinkle the whole seeds on salads, soy yogurt, on top of muffins, pretty much everywhere.

I used to put in all and any of our pancakes, cassaroles, stew, and soups. My kids couldn't even tell it was there (They didn't notice the speckling)
You are the second person to bring it up today. Thanks for bringing the ingrediant to my attention. I think I'll pick some up.

According to my doctor, flaxseeds whole go straight through the body. You get some taste when you bite them, and they will break down, but the rest goes right through.

If you want the medical benefits, you need to eat it ground.

I have been using it for a couple months. Like others, I have it in my oatmeal, yoghurt, pancakes. I eat a cup of yogurt with a cup of blueberries 1/3 cup homemade muesli and flaxseed almost every day. The joy of blueberry plants in the backyard. I don't notice the difference in flavor of the yogurt mix since starting with it, but the muesli already has a nutty flavor.

Part of losing weight and taking flaxseed is trying to get off my crestor. Will go to the doctor soon to have my levels checked.

    Good luck.

From what I have read, the golden is beneficial for recipes where it would look odd to have tiny brown specks, so anything light colored. Ground flaxseed does not last as long and should be kept in the freezer. Whole flaxseed lasts 1 year when refrigerated. I bought a coffee grinder to grind up the whole flaxseed I bought. I use it as an egg replacement in recipes. 1 Tbls flaxseed to 2 Tbls water for each egg.
