How do I feel about them? It's just protein. It helps people reach their protein goals. Protein comes from many sources, shakes/powders are just another source. Some people like to drink whey protein because it's absorbed fast, or casein because it's absorbed slowly. I guess getting it in those forms allows them to manipulate the timing of their protein absorption. For me, it's just about meeting my overall protein goal.

Yes, I have a shake probably 2 out of 3 days because it helps me meet my protein goal. I find protein powder a relatively inexpensive way of getting protein. I eat some meat, but wouldn't really want to eat more than I do now, and sometimes I would struggle to hit my goal without supplementing.

No, I wouldn't say I "need" them, it's just a helpful supplement to meet my goals. If I didn't have the shakes I'd probably increase my meat consumption, or have an extra bowl of greek yoghurt or whatever. The shakes add a bit of variety though.

I mostly use Optimum Nutrition gold Standard whey double chocolate flavour. I usually add it to skimmed milk, a little almond milk (I experimented to find the ratio I like best) and cocoa powder. I sometimes add a few drops of professional food flavouring that I have for baking. Or sometimes I'll add a little black coffee to make it a bit mocha-y. Sometimes I use the vanilla flavour and just have that with milk or almond milk. I don't get too exotic. This website has some good recipes for all sorts, not just shakes: http://proteinpow.com/category/powder/whey

If you are working out and watching macros they can help. If you think they will help you lose weight without working out then no don't bother with them.
I have soy protein now I am trying to finish. I use it after exercise. It helps me meet my macros too. I aim for 100 grams a day. I also like quest bars after working out.

    Boom. Yep.

There is nothing magical about protein powders. It's just a way to get protein in a way that might be more convenient than, say, keeping a chicken breast in your car for after your workout.
