If you do start on a weight training programme do you really need to buy extra protein and have shakes??

Protein will help to build and repair your muscles. But you can usually get enough without having to use shakes or powders.
Eggs, cottage cheese, meat and fish....0 -
You don't have to have protien shakes. You just need to get your protien up however you prefer.0

I get lots of protien without having powders, bars or shakes and have done well for the last 3-4 months...
It does take work and planning. I typically have protien with every meal...bacon/cheese/eggs for breakfast, leftovers for lunch and regular dinners.
Now that summer is here tho and I like drinking fruit smoothies for breakfast I may use some alternative protien sources in them.
ETA: protien plays an important role if you are lifitng as it helps repair the muscle...along with keeping you feeling fuller longer.0 -
As long as you choose your protein sources wisely you should be fine. Most protein powders, shakes, bars, and gels are made for convenience and to give you something that tastes decent while keeping a good protein to carb intake ratio.0
