Increased Water Retention

A few weeks ago I quite suddenly put on 2 kilos and couldn't figure out why, then I realised I was urinating a lot less frequently (I normally go quite a lot) even though my fluid intake hadn't changed.

My feeling is that I have a sudden increase in water retention.

I try to drink at least 8 cups of water on top of the insane amounts of herbal tea I drink (about 5-10 cups a day). Some days I'm a bit under and some days I'm a bit over. There are two meals we have a week that are pretty high in sodium but other than that my intake is quite low. On the days we eat these I try and increase my water intake. I did think the retention could be hormonal but 2 weeks in and no period is making me rethink that.

The only thing that has changed is that I have started drinking coffee - one cup a day. I suppose I'm wondering if that one cup a day could have such a drastic effect on water retention?

I wouldn't think it would be the coffee, I think it usually has the opposite effect (diuretic). Bit strange... there's no other reason for the no period, lol?

Coffee wouldn't affect water retention, unless you're dumping a couple hundred calories worth of sugar into it every day. The sugar could lead to glycogen storage which increases water weight.

Thanks for the responses, I do add a little bit of sugar into the coffee but not a huge amount.
Ah well ... I'll just have to keep thinking about it.

Ha! I did worry about that for a brief moment but it would be incredibly unlikely so I doubt it.

Hmm, that's a tough question. The reasons for water retention are numerous. I'm going to guess that if there wasn't anything significant you changed in your habits, that it will just go away on it's own. Bodies will retain water from things like allergies or really, anything that makes it feel a little under the weather. Heck, the change in weather can cause water retention because it's a change in how the body has to operate (to adjust to the change in heat/humidity), and some bodies are a little more sensitive to it that others.

My conclusion is that if it continues, I might recommend talking to a doctor. Chances are, though, it won't stick around, as it sounds like you're drinking enough water. (:
