Abs are made in the kitchen?

I keep hearing the saying that "Abs are made in the kitchen", or even "Abs are made in the gym but REVEALED in the kitchen". I understand that healthy eating is key to loosing weight, but I'm unsure of the validity of this saying. What does it really mean? Is there any science behind this? Does anyone have any tips or successes in regards to this?

too much body fat = no abs.
Everyone HAS abs- you just can't see them- most of the time it's from excess body fat- occasionaly it's because they are underdeveloped.
It isn't "science backing it up"
if you have to sweatshirts on- you can't see your frame- same thing for muscles- to much body fat- you cant' see the underlying structure or muscles.0 -

Basically this is saying that for visible abdominal definition you have to be pretty damned lean. A male needs to be around 10 - 12% BF for really clearly defined abs. I'm at around 18% and you can see that I have them, but they're not all ripped looking at whatnot...I would need to continue to cut more fat to really define them.
I had clearly visible 6 pack abs in high school and when I was in the military...I was pretty lean in those days.0 -
The phrase just means you need low body fat to see abs. And controlling that is more caloric restriction, than exercise.0

This is true. You cannot out-exercise a bad diet. You must lower your body fat percentage to reveal the muscles.0

Weight train for body composition.
Strip the fat off via caloric deficit.
No scientific evidence really needed for that theory.

Yeah I've always assumed the whole Abs in the kitchen thing was just another way of saying you can't out train a poor diet. Of course "poor" is subjective and relative.0 -

My body is science!
I'll agree with all of this!0
