Golfers and weight loss?

When I first started losing weight, I was really hoping that my improved fitness would help my game, but it seems to have done just the opposite. My swing is a mess, and it's really kind of disheartening (especially since I'm playing competitively for the first time this season). It's certainly not disheartening enough that I want the weight back, but it's making golf frustrating instead of enjoyable.

Have you had this experience?
If so, how did you cope? Practice, practice, practice? Swing modifications? Working with a pro?
And how long did it take before your swing straightened out again?
