I'm looking at taking vitamin D supplementation along with the CLA I currently take. I have been told by certified sports nutritionist, Rehan Jalali, that taking vitamin D alongside CLA has health benefits and will support my plan and goals.
My question is (which I regret not asking him when I met him) what dosage of vitamin D would I need? I have looked online and you can get dosage between 400UM and 5000UM! I'm currently taking 4-6g of CLA a day.
My question is:
How much time do you spend outside in the sun each day?
Your body makes its own Vitamin D from sunlight.
That's a terrifying thought...0 -
This is more a question for a doctor or pharmacist...while uncommon, there is a risk of toxicity if you take too much.
For adults, the RDA is 600 IU
You would have to take a whole bottle of pills at once before you got to that toxicity problem. I had a vitamin D deficiancy a while back and my doctor perscribed me pills that were 50,000 IU and had me take one a week. I asked if that seemed high and he said that whatever my body didn't absorb would just be expelled by urine. Your body will absorb what it needs and get rid of the rest.
You need to find a new doctor. Vitamin D is fat soluble and is NOT excreted through urine like the water soluble vitamins are. That's why there's an increased risk of toxicity - because we don't excrete what we don't need of vitamin D very efficiently, and the levels can build over time if you're taking too much.
ETA: This is not to say that getting to toxic levels is common, but it does happen.0 -

Not very much, and when I do, it's either winter way up here yonder in the great North or I've got my SPF dialed up to the max. Skin cancer's the pits, yo. :glasses:0 -
It's so weird to see all the guys in here offering to help with the vitamin D issues. My husband offered the same thing. He also thinks that he can handle things when I want to go to the spa and get a facial. Look at you fellas, being all chivalrous and stuff. Good for you. :flowerforyou:

Vitamin D is a hormone and in talking with my pharmacist (I had a saliva test done with them), I take two Vitamin D gel tabs a day. Talk to your doc about it.0

Wow, didn't expect so many replies!
I have been advised to take 1000IU a day so that's what I'm going with and see how it goes.My question is:

Unfortunately not that much. 1) I work in an office so don't get to venture out much. 2) I live in the UK so sun is a rarety!0 -
Last time I had my bloodwork done, it was perfect except I was vitamin D deficient.
My doctor told me to buy 1000 daily in addition to my multi.
If you're not deficient I'm not sure how much you should take though.0 -
I take 10000IU 3x a week, but I also use a goLite at work for 30 minutes a day in the fall/winter to help. I can't say that it works for certain... maybe it is a placebo effect, but I have had fewer issues with seasonal depression since starting the light therapy...0
-
I think to get it right you would have to have some blood work tests...
^^ This right here. Get your blood work done to see where you are and supplement accordingly.
To whoever said the RDA is 600 IU's that is woefully inadequate. Actually most of the RDA's for supplements is far below what one should be taking. I take about 4,000 IU's of vitamin D a day. (I also get my blood work done every year as well)0 -
My doc says levels are supposed to be between 40 and 60 (not sure what the unit is). Mine were 14, so I take 5,000iu per day of a whole-food vitamin D supplement. I use a brand called "Vitamin Code" Raw D3. It also has a pro-biotic in it. I didn't realize for the longest time how many body systems benefit from vitamin D, but since improving my levels I feel SO MUCH BETTER on so many levels.
Good luck to you!0 -

^This.
Vitamin D is not water soluble and will not be excreted in the urine. It is stored in fat.0 -
Why I don’t take vitamin D supplements
Posted 11 Nov 2012
Vitamin D has been associated with numerous health benefits, including cardiovascular and immune health, bone strength, and prevention of cancer. However, studies claim that most of us are deficient in vitamin D, and thereby unnecessarily vulnerable to increased heart disease, stroke, cancer, diabetes, osteoporosis, infection and autoimmune disorders. According to a review of recent studies in Natural News, there is a woldwide epidemic of vitamin D deficiency: 59% of the population is “vitamin D deficient”. The article goes onto to speculate that “What’s becoming increasingly clear from all the new research is that vitamin D deficiency may be the common denominator behind our most devastating modern degenerative diseases.”
Supplementation with vitamin D capsules is advocated even by “primal” advocate Mark Sisson, normally one to take inspiration from our paleolithic ancestors, shunning medication and embracing a lifestyle of eating whole foods and engaging in moderately stressful, playful exercise:
We can’t all bask in the midday sun.. For those of us unable to run shirtless and shoeless through a sun kissed meadow…our option is oral intake… food will help, but it won’t suffice. You need something stronger. ..take a good D3 supplement if you can’t get real sunlight. As long as you don’t go overboard on the dosage, you’re good to go. If it’s not in an oil-based capsule, just take it with a bit of fatty food (not a stretch for an Primal eater). It travels the same pathway and results in the same benefits. It’s always easier to just let nature take its course, but it’s not always realistic. A good general rule is 4000 IU per day.
Therefore, we should supplement with vitamin D. Right?
Not so fast. A closer examination shows that low vitamin D levels may be a consequence, not a cause, of poor health. And that supplementation with Vitamin D may actually be counterproductive. Let me explain.

A nutritionist is not a doctor. See a doctor. Get blood work. Work with a dietician, not a nutritionist, if you want to work on your specific nutritional needs.0
