I recently started doing one of the Jillian Micheals workout dvds. I was wondering how you guys track this type of exercises in your diary?

I used to log it as 20 minutes of circuit training.

I create a new exercise for each of the different DVDs as cardio exercise. I train with a heart rate monitor, and log the results (duration, calories...). This way, I can compare the different workouts, and find out if I'm improving.

I thought about getting a heart rate monitor so I can track my actually calories burned instead of using a preset number. What time of monitor do you use?

I have 2 different monitors: Polar FT7 (wrist watch type, chest strap, will link to some cardio equipment in the gym), and Polar H7 (Bluetooth link to my iPhone 4s, chest strap with sensor only, will also link to gym equipment). Both worked very well for me. Batteries don't last too long, but they are very easy to replace. Right now, I mostly use the H7, because the wrist watch band annoys me. I used the FT7 a lot in the gym, because I didn't want to leave my phone on the bench all the time during a set. Just personal preference, the are both good, IMO.

HRM are for steady state cardio and JM videos are not that...

circut training is the best option.

JM workout person here and I concur with circuit training. I log it as circuit training with the number of minutes for the day's workout.

Whatever works for you.... Circuit training or not, you're burning calories. However, the readings on my HRM are much lower than the training 'guess'timates in MFP. I'm not trying to lose weight, but if you have to really count your workouts, you're probably not working off as much as you think.
My H7 has different options for different types of training. The calorie results depend on my training intensity. I use the monitor for training with heart rate zones; I time my rest periods between sets depending on my heart rate; the H7 links with the GPS to my phone for sprint drills and power walks on the track, I take it swimming.... There are all kinds of different options to use a heart rate monitor, besides boring steady state cardio.
