It depends on how much you are going over. A few extra grams isn't going to hurt you, but just like unused carbs and fats, unused protein is stored by your body as fat, not to mention they are difficult for you body to process in large amounts. If you are doing a lot of strength training, extra protein may be required, if not then try to stick to your goals.

I too have the same problem.. but even if I am 100 over on protein and I still have 300 calories left, I have to eat those calories, or else I am not getting enough calories in my body. But I think the calories are more important that protein because every time I go over my protein and not my calories the little thing says,
"if you eat like this you will weigh 128 in 5 weeks"
where as, if I go over my calories and not my protein it usually adds about 5-7 pounds on to that.

I'm not sure about you guys... but I always go over my number on protein according to what MFP says I need. I meet with a wellness manager weekly and she tells me to get between 60 and 80 grams of protein a day, but MFP usually only says I need maybe 50. The rule of thumb is to try to keep your nutrition at 40% carbs, 30% fat, 30% protein. It's difficult, especially for women, to allow yourself to eat that much fat - but all these numbers in the right combination will give you the results you want!
  • I can't seem to understand this my protein count for the day is 54 i still go over and all I really eat is chicken, turkey , bake fish , salads . I drink plenty of water . I still go over all the time!

all those meats are high in protein, thats why. Try eating more fruits and veggies, and you do need whole grains as well. Also, please don't leave out dairy, women need LOTS of calcium DAILY! Cut back a bit on the meats, they are very good for you but you don't need more than 2-3 servings daily. A serving is just 3 oz!
  • THANKS A LOT I WILL TRY THAT , I AM JUST GET SO MAD ABOUT THIS BUT I SEE WHAT YOU ARE SAYING. THAT MY PROBLEM I AM MORE OF A MEAT EATER THEN VEGGIES AND FRUIT .I FEEL LIKE IF I EAT MORE MEAT I WILL STAY FULL WITH FRUIT AND VEGGIES I STAY HUNGRY

Protein helps you stay full longer. I saw one of Dr. Oz's shows where they did a test to see what helped people stay fuller longer, carbs, fat, or protein. The meals were the same calorie count. The person with the higher protein meal - all were pasta, chicken and veggies, stayed fuller the longest. MFP seems to set the protein count low - I wouldn't worry too much about it if you are staying in your calorie limit. In fact, I changed mine to track fiber instead because I was more interested in getting more fiber in my diet!
