Water intake

Ugh, how do you all deal with the constant need for the toilet when drinking up to your 8 cups of water a day. I cannot stand it. It wakes me every 3 or hours to go the toilet. It makes me want to avoid water so I don't have to spend most of my day in the bathroom. It is hard not to drink before bed, because of my work schedule, but I cannot stand the constant need to go pee pee.

I know mfp suggests the popular 8 glasses a day rule, but really it's 8 glasses from all sources, not JUST water, and you won't dehydrate. So if you're having a lot of watery foods like fruit or soup, you can cut back a glass or two.

Like others said, you get used to it. It takes a while - but you do. You mention that you need to drink at night due to your work schedule - I assume this means that you can't drink much during the work day?

While you probably aren't doing this but I've seen it over and over ... don't confuse "cups" with "glasses". Most of us drink from glasses that hold at least 16 ounces and think nothing of it to have a refill. That's 4 cups right there.

    My only real suggestions are:

    - Start Early - drink at least 2 cups within 30 minutes of waking up.

    - Carry a Camelback at work. There aren't many jobs where this would be a problem but there are a few. A .75 liter Camelback is just over 3 cups. If you really can't then consider drinking it during your commute.

    - Stop drinking 90 minutes before you plan to go to bed if you are having trouble sleeping all night

Give yourself time to adjust and listen to your body. It knows what to do.

Well work from home so no commute, and my water is usually bottled water, in a 12 ounce, 16 ounce, or sometimes small 8 ounce bottles. What I mean by it is hard to not drink at night is I work nights and go to bed usually around 4 am, but my day doesn't start until like 4 p.m.. I get up, make my coffee, my iced tea, and grab a water (and usually a diet shake too), then try to drink throughout the rest of the day but sometimes I forget to grab more water, being busy, and try to cram them in before I am done with work and it kills my sleep. My coffee (huge mug) sits there till I won't drink it any more cause it is cold, and same with iced tea, but I don't like when it gets warm, so when these two things happen, I tend to go get more water.

Even during the day though, I have to constantly get up from work to go pee pee and it drives me nutso (ready to start wearing diapers, LOL). It has been a month of really concentrating on water intake, for somebody who never ever ever drank water, seriously never drank water in my entire life (it sometimes makes me nauseous), and I am still not used to the constant pee peeing.

Maybe I need to remember the shakes, iced tea, coffee also all have some water in them, so maybe not try to drink exactly 8 glasses every day.

    1. You are right, your coffee, iced tea and shake all include water. The goal should be to take in 8 cups of fluid a day. A cup is considered around 250 ml or 8 ounces. This goal also depends on activity, environment, elevation, etc.

    2. You are properly hydrated if your urine is a pale to clear yellow. If its dark then you need to take in more fluids.

    3. This is just a personal preference, but why bottled water? It is much cheaper to get it from the tap and more environmentally friendly. If you like it cold, fill up a jug or bottle and stick in the fridge or add ice. If you have an issue with taste try a filter.

    4. I remember it took me a long while to get used to drinking more water without having to pee all the time; before I made it a concentrated effort I was constantly dehydrated.

Really funny thing is I have one of those water unit things that gives you hot and cold water, and u put a 5 gallon thing on top. We fill the 5 gallon thing with tap water. I don't know why, but prefer the iced cold water bottles, and I can finish one and keep track of how many I drink. I have tried refilling bottles with the water thing, but I find they have a taste after a few refills, and I have this mental thing that stagnant water (such as what would remain on side of bottle after a few refills) can get slimy. You really cannot wash water bottles out. Yes, I can use a cup or say my own home water bottle, but I just found drinking these was much easier to monitor and iced cold.

I am using water to stay hydrated of course, but also as a filler when eating/drinking, so not to eat as much. It really helps if you drink a bottle before you eat, IMO, anyway.
