When to get rid of your 'fat' clothes

So I've lost a total of 60 pounds from when I first started on this journey over 3 years ago. (about 30 since MFP).
Many of my original clothes are very loose (YAY). Some just fit and look better, and I've benn filling in with some new things along the way. I just was wondering - when did you really purge your closets and get rid of the bulk of the fat clothes you've been wearing for years??
Thanks

  • If the clothes don't "fit" any more. Get rid of them. But keep one pair of pants/shirt/dress...to compare. My really fat clothes were all way to tight before I started this journey., now they fit comfortable. I have bought new clothes to fill in and the ones that are way to big I donate them.

I'm having a garage sale this weekend - if it doesn't fit - out it goes - Even if I have to fill in with some stuff from thrift stores due to budget. I don't want the fat clothes anymore.

If I am between sizes or just don't have a lot in the next size down, I hang onto my fat clothes until they just can't be worn anymore, too baggy or won't stay up. About every two sizes, I go through the closet and dresser and clean out things that are much too big to keep. If something still fits and looks better, like you said, then keep it until it becomes too big to wear.

Once clothes are more than 1 size up from my current size, I donate them. I started as a 16 & am now a 10, so I'll keep the 12s for now (good for comfy / lazy / bloat days) but am getting rid of my 14s & 16s. Tops I keep until I decide they just look unflattering or make me look heavier than I am.

I started the purge about 25/30 lbs in to my weighloss but never finished. SO a few days ago I went crazy in my closet. Eveyrthing size 8 and up I put in a box for charity automatically. THen everything else I tried on. Most was too big so I put that in the box too.

I am going to finish it all up tomorrow and bring to the charity. I think it is going to be for me mentally. OUT with all that old "former me" stuff and on with "the new me".

I was thinking about this today. I am hoping to have a second baby, so I am reluctant to totally get rid of my larger clothes, because I know that there will be times during early pregnancy and postpartum when I will need some extra room. I will probably go by the "one size too big" rule that was described by a PP. So if I get down to a 14, the. I will get rid of my 18's.

What Nedra said. I lost a few sizes but just toted and stored my clothes because I knew I wanted another baby and they would come in handy.
Because I kept all of those 'fat' clothes, I have only spent a whopping $36 on maternity clothes. I can only imagine what it would have cost me to go buy a new wardrobe instead of using my toted wardrobe.

If you really think you are going to have a need for them, keep them! Aside from that, there is no point. Unless, you really foresee yourself giving up and caving to the food and getting fat again - in which case, you at going to have a need for them.

When they don't fit. Having them around means you have something to grow into. Get rid of them.

I get rid of them as soon as they're too big. I have no intention of ever wearing them again. Except t-shirts...they're comfy to sleep in.
