Strength Training+ Cardio vs Cardio only???

Hi there! I have about 80 pounds to lose and a friend of mine who has been inspirational and helpful when it comes to nutrition told me I should lose at least another 10 lbs before I start any kind of weight training. I want to buy dumbells or join a gym but she's telling me I need to lose more fat first in order for it to make a difference. Then on the other hand she tells me - lifting burns more calories than cardio.... I'm so confused. Any success stories in either direction to share?

Most fitness professionals recommend that everyone do strength training. There's no need to wait.
You'll have more options at a gym. Either way, follow a good program.0 -
I find that when I do strength training and cardio, I lose weight faster and feel more fit overall. I don't go to a gym, but I do push-ups, squats, lunges, crunches, etc. at home. That's not strength training the same way that weight lifting is strength training, but it helps with whole body fitness.
If you want to give lifting a go, do it (but maybe research form a little first). There are TONS of people on here who have given lots of strength training advice, and I'm sure you'll find it if you peruse the boards0
