In my experience as long as my body is getting the nutrition it requires then what i do with any remaining calories is up to me. The result's of a serious exercise regime however are hard to ignore. It's true that exercise gets you strong and fit and doesn't DIRECTLY contribute to losing weight much. But just being strong and fit will make you naturally burn more calories. As you will just be far more willing to do stuff.

I feel that when I eat clean, my body feels different than when I just eat. It just feels lighter and not so stuffed if you know what I mean. This in turn makes me more likely to exercise and for a longer time.

For example when I was just calorie watching last year, I went to the gym but did the treadmill for only 30 minutes. Yet now I am eating somewhat clean (almost no processed food, a lot of fresh vegetables and real food. I'm doing low carb.) and I want to exercise (jogging, yoga, circuit training). I don't feel like it's a drag.

Eating 1400 calories of lean protein and vegetables with very little (<30g) carbs will make you body feel full but light whilst eating 1400 calories of fried chicken, salad, ice cream and a piece of bread will make your body feel dumpy, slumpy and "fat". I don't think you'd want to exercise eating the latter (kudos to those who overcome and still do though!). So I like eating when it makes me feel lighter yet satisfied. I especially love yoga and don't think I could do yoga with carbs in my belly!

I don't snack because there's not a lot of snack items that I can eat currently and I don't feel the want to snack. But Blue Diamond smokehouse almonds are so good! And when I need to boost my calorie and fat intake I mix peanut butter (1 T), unsweetened cocoa powder (1/2 T), whipped cream (2 T), and coconut oil (2 T when it's solid), mix it all together and eat it. It's quite good!

I do macros. I do 70/20/10. I upped my carbs bc I wanted to exercise more and jog more.

I don't get eating clean. I eat more veg, fruit etc rather than "dirty" (i.e. mcdonalds, crisps etc) as it keeps me fuller. but eating at a calorie deficity is eating at a calorie deficit.

So far ( 14 months in and 50 lb down) I have lost ~ 2/3 due to diet restriction and 1/3 due to energy expended due to exercise.

I started exercising to be able to eat more cos I love my grub.

I did IIFYM and honestly it makes me feel worse. I feel less energy and more tired. My workouts also suffer cos of this and therefore probably also gains. Eating clean and low carbs works for me the best. As of actual fat loss I haven't noticed any difference as far as my net calories are the same.

    Then you did it wrong.

IIFYM works great when you do it correctly. Hit your protien goal and you stay fuller longer, get your fats in to feel satiated and your carbs give you your energy and then you usually have room left for your treats.

IIFYM does not mean eating whatever you want when you want it means hitting your macro goals within your calorie limits and having room left for those treats...often referred to as 80/20...80% nutrient dense "healthy" foods with 20% for those extra items you want.

AS well people who follow IIFYM eat fast food to fill macros....ie Dairy Queen chicken strips, or McDonalds burgers (2 cheese burgers and a grilled chicken burger together with one bun).

Exercise is for health and fitness.

PS the fact I get my chocolate everynight makes eating at a deficit easier to handle for 15months.

Well I did a 7-day bootcamp last week and part of that was nutrition workshops with one of the country's top nutritionists. What she said is that proper nutrition is crucial to your health and exercise is crucial to your fitness. You won't get fit by simply eating healthily and you won't get healthy simply by exercising and eat crud. There was a ton of nutritional information, but some of the main tips she gave was:

    - Eat some protein with EVERY meal
    - DON'T use low-fat products
    - Make sure you eat some essential fats each day (i.e. fats derived from oily fish, nuts & seeds)
    - Chose products which contain ingredients that are as unprocessed as possible; the more processing an ingredient goes through, the less nutritional value it has
    - Operate the 80/20 rule, eat 'whole', good food for 80% of the time and a bit of what you fancy for 20%

I'd add that the fitness instructors also supported good nutrition, rather than simply 'anything as long as it fits your calorie goal'
