Hummus, other dips sold at Target and Trader Joe's recalled for listeria risk

12:09 PM CDT, May 22, 2014

Nearly 15,000 pounds of hummus and other dips sold at Trader Joe's and Target were recalled Friday over concerns of listeria contamination.

Massachusetts-based Hot Mama's Foods voluntarily recalled the dips after the potential for contamination was found during a routine test of Target Archer Farms Traditional Hummus by the Texas Department of Health, the company said in a statement.

No illnesses have been reported. Listeria monocytogenes can cause infections in young children and elderly people. Symptoms can include fever, muscle ache, headache, stiff neck and confusion, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Some of the affected products were shipped nationally and include 10-ounce and 2-pound containers of Target Archer Farms Traditional Hummus marked for use by June 11, and 8-ounce containers of Trader Joe's Edamame Hummus with April 28, April 29 and May 14 use-by dates. A full list of recalled products can be found on the Hot Mama's Foods website (http://www.hotmamasfoods.com/about-us/lansal-inc-voluntarily-recalls-hummus-dip-products-due-to-possible-health-risk.html)

Hot Mama's Foods is urging customers who purchased the discard it or return it for a full refund. Consumers with questions can call (877) 550-0694.

I find it funny that all of the Trader Joe's hummus is already past it's "best by" date. If you were still planning to eat hummus that expired nearly a month ago I think you'd have more to worry about than possible listeria contamination.

Such a shame: Archer Farm's is amazing! Thank you for sharing though. :) It's really kind of you.
