Hey ya'll. I am a petite fatty (my word, not yours) who is new to this fitness game. I have been dieting for about a month now, walking at least 2 miles daily. I want to start lifting along with walking. Me and my friend plan to lift 3 times a week. Any advice on how to start? How many reps? What exactly do reps mean? lol. I used to lift weights when I played sports in high school and am pretty strong, even tho I am a chunk. But I forget everything. Help! All advice welcomed!

Read one of the New Rules of Lifting books. They are easy, quick reads that will give you a solid knowledge foundation to build from along with an actual routine to follow

First of all, congratulations on making the commitment to get fit. Weight lifting will definitely aid in weight loss, and you'll be happy to see some nice muscle definition emerge as the fat comes off.

Three times a week is great - give your muscles a full 48 hours to recover between sessions. In addition to the New Rules books DavPul mentioned, here are some good beginner resource: http://www.bodybuilding.com/fun/bbinfo.php?page=BeginningBodybuildingBasics

Here's the one piece of advice I'll give you that is so crucial to weight training -- lifting weights is only half of it. Getting proper nutrition, particularly before and right after you work out, is essential. Ignore the nutrition, and your efforts will mostly be wasted. Here's more on the subject: http://www.beginnertriathlete.com/cms/article-detail.asp?articleid=557

    Good luck!
