Always over on sugar

Today I was over on sugar after my morning snack at 10:30 am...the fact that the program doesn't separate natural & refined sugars makes it difficult to know how over I really am. I haven't had dinner or my night time dessert yet & I'm already 28 grams of sugar over due to an apple & some no sugar added apple sauce. I do still have 503 calories left to eat but there is no way I'll be able to have dinner & dessert without any sugars (in the foods, not added, I don't add sugar to anything besides Raisin Bran), that's virtually impossible! Yesterday I was 14 grams over which I thought was bordering on an issue but today I'll be like 40 & that just seems like an awful lot. Meanwhile my friend who is on Weight Watchers is telling me that fruits & veggies are all 0 points so to eat as much as I want but when they are all sugar doesn't that kind of defeat the purpose of dieting? Help...I don't want to have to skip dinner!!

I had the same problem...My trainer at the gym told me to temporarily give up the fruit during my initial first few months of weight loss, and that we will add it back in gradually (the naturally occuring sugar). I was on weight watchers for years and ate tons of "zero" and one point fruits, but never really saw much weight loss. I have cut my sugar down to 20 grams per day by literally planning out my entire day the night before and making adjustments if I am over in my sugar intake. I have lost 22 pounds since the end of August so I know it is working! I never paid attention to my sugar intake on weight watchers like I am doing now, and it is simply amazing how much sugar is already added to most of our food. I have found that pretty much anything prepackaged, especially cereal, has way too much sugar for me. Instead of Raisin Bran, try Kellog's Special K, protein cereal. I think it's about only 6 grams of sugar per serving. Good luck!
  • I am ALWAYS over on sugar! So, I removed it and replaced it with iron : ) A girl always needs iron.
I have been losing weight like crazy just by focusing on the calories anyway!

I have the exact same problem with sugar. I eat lots of apples and grapes but also cereals and snack bars and I seem to always be over in sugar by lunch time.
It might be annoying but you could manage your refined sugar intake vs. natural sugar intake separate from MFP just to see if you are on track. That is one thing I wish MFP would fix, is good vs. bad sugar.

Thanks! I normally eat a SpecialK bar every morning...I only eat Raisin Bran as a snack or on weekends but it's not high in sugar, it just happens to be the only thing that I physically add sugar to, anything else I use Splenda. Today I opted for a Jimmy Dean D-Lite sandwich which kept me full so I didn't need the apple as a snack & the sandwich is low in sugar & high in protein...I totally recommend them!!

On the weekends I eat sugar cereals for brunch (I sleep in so I don't eat breakfast) & I will never give them up...ever (I'd be lost without my Cinnamon Toast Crunch) but during the week I'm trying to make it a point to watch myself & see what I'm really eating all 3 meals so after seeing how an apple effects my diet I'll be sure to not have one with my sugar cereal on Sunday anymore :)

This is also good to know as I've yet to reach my calories for the day once (mind you, today is day 3)!! It's amazing how a stupid app can honestly help you monitor your foods. Last night I had breakfast for dinner & I checked the app before I cooked & thankfully I did...I omitted the hash browns so I could have a Skinny Cow ice cream later & the ice cream was way better than those hash browns would have been & I was still full after dinner so I didn't even need them but had they been on the plate I would have totally eaten them!

planning foods is the way to go. I have all my meals prepared the sunday prior to the week. cooked, weighed and portioned out in my fridge so that in the morning, I just grab the containers for the day, thrown them in my lunchbox with an icepack. and BOOM! out the door in 10 minutes :P
