New article on CNN, Diet Soda makes you lose weight

http://www.cnn.com/2014/05/27/health/diet-soda-weight-loss/index.html?hpt=hp_t3

Big surprise the companies that sell diet soda say its good for you and will help you lose weight. Later in the article they acknowledge there are health risks with long-term use of drinking diet soda, but its ok because you've lost 4 pounds!

Switching to diet was the easiest weight I ever lost.

I am drinking less diet pop than usual these days, but I've just lost some of my zeal for it. My taste for it seems to be gradually declining on its own. If someone tried to take it away from me six months ago, it would have been very bad.

Love the link at the end to a study conducted by a university rather than the Beveradge Industry

That isn't exactly what the study said.

Yes it was done by the National Beverage association so there is an agenda but...

300 people who weighed 205lb were divided in half...they were drinking diet soda...

    150 were told to continue
150 were told no more diet soda...

The 150 that drank it lost on average 13lbs over the course of the study (12 weeks)
The 150 that didn't drink it (but who knows what they substituted for it) lost on average 9lbs during the same time frame.
Cutting calories and boosting exercise takes a lot of willpower. Trying to simultaneously give up something else you regularly enjoy -- such as diet soda -- taxes your ability to stay the course. Most psychologists agree that our willpower is a limited resource.

So while this study did not track calorie consumption, the group blocked from drinking diet sodas most likely ate (or drank) more calories over the course of the 12-week diet.

Diet coke has been arounnd for 25 years and my diabetic brother has been drinking it since then and he has no negative long term health effects from it...

    and from the article
Those studies show a correlation, and are not designed to show causation. But some researchers like Swithers suspect artificial sweeteners ultimately increase the desire for sweets.

"Doing these short-term studies that look at weight can't really tell us anything about whether or not these products are contributing to these increased risks," says Swithers. "And it's really hard to look at the (long-term) data and come up with any argument that they're helping."

No where in the article did it say Later in the article they acknowledge there are health risks with long-term use of drinking diet soda

I probably have diet soda in my blood due to drinking it for 25 years.

Eating a calorie deficit is what helps one to lose weight, whether they drink diet soda or not.

Diet coke is best with rum. Also a splash of pineapple juice.

Agreed - maybe swap out pineapple juice for a lime in my perfect world.

Nothing is good with rum. Diet soda is great AFTER a shot of rum to get rid of the disgustingness of the rum lol

Where in the article do they "acknowledge that there are health risks"?

Also you seem to be confusing CNN with peer reviewed literature, its a journalism site not a scientific study site.

The Beverage industry has an "agenda" to sell their products by marketing them but CNN has an "agenda" to sell their stories by being as provocative as they can get away with.

Anybody that mixes their Rum with soda needs to stop buying the cheap crap. I prefer Mount Gay Extra Old, Appleton 15 Year, Ron Zucappa 23 YO Blend, Anagosta 1919, and Zaya Gran Reserve 12 YO.....all with Ice/Water. You would never catch me drinking those cheapo 5 Year Old Rums like Barcardi White or Black.

The only long term effect that I've heard of requires pretty high doses (he would need to be sipping it all day) and that's damage to tooth enamel from the acid.

This. A fine rum is like a fine cognac. Sinful to mix it with anything.
