Eating low-carb, high-protein as a vegetarian?

Hi!

I have been trying out vegetarianism for the past few months - still eating fish, sometimes some meat. I have found I feel better that way.

Today at the gym, my trainer who looked at my physical condition and created a program for me to follow, suggested a low carb, high protein diet (except for breakfast). But since I do not normally eat meat, which has a lot of protein, is that something I could reasonably follow?

Advice on specific foods/recipes would be much appreciated!

  • I have been a vegetarian for 8 years and only in recent years have I actually paid attention to what I am eating. terrifying to realize how many years I spent nutrient deficient. right now I am an okay weight but very high in body fat, and am determined to change! therefore I'm working on that low carb high protein thing, and let me tell you... it's hard! vegetables contain a lot more carbs than people think, and I believe it is impossible to get enough protein without supplements. because you eat fish you have an upper hand, fish is packed with protein and nutrients. I only consume eggs and dairy.

here's what I eat for protein (my goal is 150g per day. I usually hit between 110-140 so far)
    1 egg, 3tbsp egg white (12g)
    quest bars (amazing) (20g)
fage 0% greek yogurt mixed with frozen berries (18g)
    tofu (12g)
    plant fusion protein powder (21g)
    PB2 (powdered peanutbutter) (5g)
    cottage cheese (11g)
    hummus (5g)
    almonds (unsalted) (8g)
veggie burgers (morningstar grillers prime are my fav) (17g)
cheese (very little, I eat weight watcher colby jack cheese sticks) (7g)

I try to eat 110 or less grams of carbs a day and 30-40g of fiber. I plan my whole day out first thing in the morning, or at the beginning of the week so I can meal prep on Sunday's. this way I don't end up at dinner with only 5g carbs left and needing 50g protein (impossible on a vegetarian diet, in my opinion) protein keeps you full! I have found that a nutrient packed protein shake (protein, kale, spinach, fruit, almond milk) keeps me full for HOURS. I stopped having cravings after about two weeks (I only recently started tracking my macros again after a 6 month hiatus) and I get excited planning my meals for the day!

    hope this helps! :)
