To exercise or not?

Hello again, so I have talked with both my dietician and doctor, one told me to exercise and the other told me to stop. I walk on the treadmill daily at 3 mph for at least an hour at 10 % incline. An hour and half on weekdays. Because I am underweight I don't know who to listen to. One also told me to stop counting calories and the other told me to keep counting? I'm in a dilemma :/

Exercise is for health & fitness.

Cardio exercise is for building stamina and a heart health. Resistance exercise is for maintaining lean muscle, bone health, and a keeping a healthy metabolism.

Eight hours of cardio a week is excessive when you are underweight. You could use some strength training....even body weight exercise (squats, push ups, planks) is a good place to start.

If you are looking to gain weight.....too much cardio is counterproductive. If you are under-eating you will continue to lose weight.

currious as to which said which

generally i'd say listen to the doctor.

would also agree that too much cardio would be counter productive for someone underweight. is walking 8hrs a week too much? well you could probably get as good or a better work out for heart health in much less time

Hi again. You've been here before.

I'd say stop walking at this time because you don't need to be burning any extra calories.

I would suggest an exercise program that includes some cardio, strengthening, flexibility and balance.

Based on your other posts, I would say that you're exercising too much. I second the suggestion to replace some cardio with weight training.

Was it your doctor or dietician that told you to stop? Which one is helping with your recovery?

I honestly could not endure the boredom of 8h treadmill a week.
But if you enjoy it, why not, just make sure you eat enough to make up for it...
Which brings me to counting calories - if you feel you need to count them in order to get enough food, then keep doing it. If the numbers make you worry/obsess/stress too much, toss 'em.

If your doc is telling you one thing and your dietitian is telling you another, you need to get your healthcare providers to talk to each other. It sounds like you're kind of lost. Your husband's in the military, right? Contact the behavioral health clinic at your local MHT and tell them you think you have an eating disorder. Make sure you get a coordinated plan so that they're all talking to each other as a team. Get your husband to go with you to offer moral support and advocate for you. Don't **** around...you're seriously messing with your long-term health, both physical and mental.
