Hi, does anybody know of the Olympic gymnast called Louis Smith who won silver at London 2012?
Well my question relates to him.
Being a gymnast the man was incredibly fit and toned with minimal body fat but after the London games he really let himself go and put on loads of weight which was well publicised in newspapers etc (in the UK).
But I recently saw that he had got back to his old physique but what was most impressive was that he said that he managed it in just 3 months, (please google "Louis smith fat" for the transformation pictures).
My question is can this really be done with mere mortals like myself? Or was it that because he had already been in that great shape before that he had some sort of pre-disposition to it so then found it easier to lose the weight?
Also he claims that he did it using only tabata although he mentioned nothing about diet.
So please give me your thoughts on this and also please look for the pictures of him on google.
Thanks

Depends on where you are starting from
But yes it is possible.
Like a lot of body builders they start their cut about 3 - 4 months out....
Because the foundation of muscle they have underneath the fat is there.....
So all they need to do is dial in their diet, and they can get in stage shape within 12 - 16 weeks.
So yes your gymnast u mentioned is the same way....they typically have a lot of LBM.....
So since they have their foundation in place, and were continuing their training, it is very easy for them to get back to where they need to be.0 -
It's much easier to regain previous levels of fitness and strength than it is to get to those levels in the first place.
Don't forget Louis Smith has a lot of advantages over "mere mortals" - young, previous exceptional condition, access to and knowledge of best training methods. To cap it all as an elite athlete he is probably somewhat of a genetic freak.
It works that same for ordinary people though - just at a lower level. Last year I restarted strength training after an injury break at was for me a fairly low point strength-wise (half weight of my previous bests from years ago). Despite being an old fart that's never been in great shape I quickly increased my lifts adding 50% in fairly short time getting back to a level that is pretty good for my age. Had I not been strong in my 30's that progress would have been much slower.0
