Have you had to cut back or completely quit drinking before seeing results in your weight loss attempts? I love wine and beer, but I feel like I should completely stop drinking for a while. I'd like to know what you did that helped you cut back or completely quit drinking.

This. I have a beer or something else almost every night. Sometimes I walk a few extra miles after dinner just so I can then have one. Make it fit and enjoy life as though you only get to do it once.0 -

I had to cut back. Now I work it into my calories for the day. Sometimes it fits and sometimes it doesn't.
I do notice a difference when I haven't drank for awhile around retaining water. Other than that, I don't think it matters as long as you remain at a defict.
Sometimes that extra 20 minutes is so I can drink! :drinker:0 -

When I cut it out all together.. it still didnt change much
So I am back to beer one day a week! :drinker:0 -
I've found I've had to cut it out all together. When I have nights out with friends I drink beer and it sets my weight loss back about a week each time.0

Not necessary. If you're in a caloric deficit, it will not be converted directly or even indirectly to fat.

I've had a glass of wine sometimes two glasses every night since I started actively trying to lose weight. I've lost 15 pounds during that time. I just make sure it fits in my calories and will often eat as much as I want for dinner before I drink a glass of wine.0

Like all things caloric have to take in moderation and log it to fit into your calorie goal. Wine and beer can have several hundred calories in a drink. You can have them, just means you are eating less that day though.0 -

I don't drink much, but when I do, I fit it within my calorie goal. Mostly shots, craft beer, or red wine.0

There is no need to cut it out completely. You have to find a healthy long term sustainable balance that fits into your lifestyle. You can still have it, just make sure it fits into your calorie goal. There may be a random Friday night that you will go over b/c you had one too many, but even that is not going to derail your weight loss efforts.
I have a glass of wine daily, and beer every weekend and have been maintaining and lowering my body fat percentage for 4 months now. I just log what I drink and am mindful of it....except for the occasional night when I may have a few more, but it all balances out in the end.
Its different for everyone, so you just have to find what works for you. Good luck!0 -

It won't stop you from burning fat if your overall calorie intake is less than your calorie expenditures.0 -
I think my biggest problems right now are:
- the fact that I never really know when my bf is going to bring home beer, and I'll drink one without thinking about how it fits into my calories.
- the fact that I have a broken foot and no pool access. The doc also recommended that I don't use a stationary bike bc it puts pressure directly on my metatarsals.
It's harder to balance things with my alcohol intake right now, since my exercise options are limited.0 -

Log it first. If you think he is going to bring home beer, work it into your calories before you drink it. If I log it first, it makes me more mindful of what I'm eating or drinking. Sorry about your foot! That stinks! Cheers!0 -
I always have justified having my alcohol in my diet... but think for me, it is definitely hindering progress.
Too many weeks I go have too many drinks, which ultimately also lead to bad food decisions.
My suggestion is that if it fits into your lifestyle, go ahead and stop drinking all together. Or at least limit yourself to only 1 or 2 per day. But if you can stop, I'd say go for it while losing weight.0 -
I am currently struggling with the same issue. The problem is once I have a drink or two I find myself mindlessly snacking and going way over my daily goal so I've decided to stop drinking while I am still trying to lose a significant amount of weight.0

I've cut back - mostly because I can fit a few glasses of wine in a week - not a few bottles!
Probably healthier to drink a little less anyway - but I still drank over the holiday weekend -way too much in fact - now I'm cutting back again.......
I do better when I drink less.....1) less liquid calories 2) more food so not as hungry 3) not impaired so I make better judgments (rather than eat the whole bowl of chips that is on the table).0 -

Alcohol cannot be converted into fat for storage. As the previous poster said, the body uses alcohol preferentially because there is NO storage form for it. This halts the metabolism of other nutrients (particularly carbs and fats) and the excess carbs will be converted to and stored as fat. The amount of excess carb converted and stored depends entirely on how much you drink, how quickly, what you drink, and how fast you metabolize the alcohol. YAY science!
That said, when I'm trying to lose weight I choose to cut alcohol out completely. For me, it's just wasted calories since chocolate is my vice0 -

I cut back during the week. No drinking Monday-Thursday. And then as the weekend rolls around i just make sure to log in what I drink. It can certainly make me think twice when I know that I've had 4 beers and I have to add in 500-600 calories, but I know I make it up during the week, or I make sure I have a nice long workout before I go out. And sometimes, that ice cold beer or beautifully made cocktail is just worth it!0

I dont drink because when I do it's atleast 12 drinks...and then all my hard work for 2-4 weeks turns pointless in 1 night of fun:sad:0
