Luxating patella & my DR told me to stop squatting...

He told me to work on building up my inner thigh muscles and to stop squatting :(
My right kneecap can be pushed from side to side, doesn't follow straight down the track and sits more to the left. Its always make grinding/cracking sounds but lately Ive had pain and swelling..hence the Dr. Visit..
Any advice on other options to build my legs and my inner thigh muscles to help center it again?

Well- he should have given you a referrel for physical therapy because those are the people to ask really

That being said: I had a simialar problem- I was running a lot in HS- and the outer muscles were pulling my patella over while I was riding- it was causing me so much pain for our horse races I would duck tape my patella in place till we were done.

One of my dad's friends is a muscle therapy type person and gave me some of the following:

    good girl/bad girl machine

also using resistance bands around the knee and doing squatting side ways walks

use a stability ball on the small of your back- and a smaller one between your knees- squat on the wall.

Peterson step ups are good for improving the knee.

That sounds a lot like something that should be a physiotherapist issue. Srsly, find a good one and go to them.

I had a similar issue and I had to work on strengthening my hip abductors. Now, I'm much better. I can't say it would work for you, but I do urge you to find a physio.

As someone whose current knee injury is still keeping me from squatting - it sucks, but rehab it and hopefully you'll squat once more in the future. Just don't try to cheat your injury - it won't cheat you out of punishment for it.

I had surgery for the same thing, except mine was pulling to the outside of my knee.

My doctor didn't want me to have to change my lifestyle (which would include squatting if you love to squat). There are ways to strengthen and balance the needed muscles to fix the problem...or if it doesn't fix it (which in my case it did not) then there's the surgical option.

A good sports therapist can give you exercises as well. When I went back to my doc for my post op, he told me that squatting would actually be key to keeping my quads strong enough to hold my kneecap in place. The more I squat, the better my knee feels.
