Thinning Oily hair? Help/Advice?
Hi, I'm barely 18 and my hair is very thin. I was born with thin hair but its worsening and my hair line is pretty obvious. My scalp is oily and I got dandruff too, I tried a lot of shampoo but everything is not working? As a girl, I'm feeling pretty self-conscious about my hair.
I am going to try washing my hair with Apple Cider Vinegar for the dandruff. Also, will wash my hair once a week and use DIY dry shampoo (baking soda, cornstarch, baby powder).
Anyone tried these methods before? What's your experience?

I haven't used shampoo and conditioner for 4 months. I use baking soda to wash and ACV to condition. Works like a charm for me.
That being said have you seen your doctor about your thinning hair?
Edit to add I also use cornstarch, cocoa, and cinnamon as a dry shampoo (because my hair is brown at the roots), works great.0 -

I would go to a dermatologist for advice.0

I would get a your thyroid and hormones checked. Homeopathic remedies can work wonders for hair but if there are underlying causes health wise, they probably won't help much.0

Try this to make the thinning less obvious. It doesn't grow your hair, just makes it seem less thin.

Castro oil is suppose to strengthen hair...google for reviews. Mix that stuff with coconut oil to make it less sticky and let it sit on your head.0

Not sure about the thinning but the dandruff/oiliness could be from hard water depending on where you live. I lived in OH and the water there was terrible. My scalp never felt clean and was always dry, flaky and itchy yet would be greasy. I tried tea tree oil shampoo, head and shoulders, clarifying shampoo, hard water shampoo etc. I finally tried Tsal (or maybe it's Tsol) it cost me $6 from the grocery store and it actually relieves my scalp. I still have some flakes but not as bad as before and it cured my itchiness after the first use. Just a thought0

Do u think regrowing my hair will help? As in shaving it completely and letting it grow again. I'm a college student, can't afford to see doctors or specialist.. Feeling pretty desperate, you can actually see some of my scalp on the left side when I tie my hair up. I'm going to try the dry shampoo method and see how it goes0

@Golightly17 Can u explain more? Never heard of thyroid/hormones being connected to thinning hair.
But I don't think its the water, I lived in Singapore (super clean, hq water) before moving to the US for college recently and I had this problem since 13. Could it be an environmental factor? I grew up in a hot and very humid country.0 -

It's highly likely that your hair problem is related to hormones, actually. Especially if it seems to be thinning rapidly. Have a blood test taken for hormones, check if anything is out of order. Is your period regular? Last time my hair was falling out at a noticeably high rate it turned out to be caused by an ovarian cyst. Luckily it was quite small and took a minor operation. My hair problems stopped immediately after.0

Thank you everyone for your advice. Why go consult a doctor and see what happens.0

Personally I find that the less I do to my hair the healthier it will be... natural oils help to maintain the hair I only wash mine once or at the most twice a week and find it looks better than ever...
My advice would be do less but also see a doctor as there may be an underlying cause that the doctor could help with....

This sounds hormone related. You need to see a doctor and get your blood checked. I lost a lot of hair when I quit birth control (happens also when women give birth, go through menopause, etc.). This is a very scary and upsetting thing. I completely understand, but you won't know unless you see someone. There are a lot of websites out there for support of women in our situation that are comforting.0

I was on the same path as you. Unfortunately no home remedy helped. The best results I got was by using the PHARMACERIS H SEBOPURIN shampoo. The problem you are describing is a seborrheic scalp, which leads to your problems. I had this too. Nothing helped until I tried this shampoo. I am using it for 2 years now and I havent changed since. Its really the best that I ever had. My hair is now thick again.
Try it. You won't regret it.
Wish you all the best0 -

The baking soda is mixed with water so it's more of a rinse that you massage into your scalp, the dry shampoo is only dusted on your hair around your scalp. It's def not for everyone though and it totally took some getting used to. I had fried my hair and needed to do something to grow it out again and repair it. This has worked wonders.0 -
First of all, check with a dermatologist and your regular physician to check for underlying hormone and skin issues.
Second, wash your hair with the gentlest non sulphate shampoo you can find and try to not do it very often (no more than every other day and try for 2 times a week). Avalon organics have some really nice ones. Oil production, if not hormonal, is usually because you are stripping your hair of its natural oils so the glands go into overproduction in order to recover. Also, stay away from hair products that have silicone (look for ingredients that have 'cone or 'oxane at the end of the name) These coat the hair and require harsh surfactants like the sulphates to remove. Using baking soda to wash and vinegar or citric acid to balance the pH is often too harsh for some people. Personally, I wash with conditioner only. I make it myself and it has a cationic surfactant that gently cleanses as well as conditions, plus a couple of hair friendly oils (argan and camellia seed) for additional moisturizing. Many who do conditioner only washing have good luck with cheap grocery store brands like Suave and VO5.
One more thing, are you getting enough fat and protein in your diet? A lack of these can often lead to thinning hair as I discovered one other time I went on a weight loss program for a couple of months. I lost almost half of my hair volume and only got about half of the loss back after improving my diet. This time I am making sure I get enough of those macros in.0 -
I lost a LOT of hair thats just now growing back due to stress and hypothyroidism in 2012. Definitely get your levels tested.
My cousin lost her hair once and suggested I use cocounut oil. I haven't yet because it's fairly expensive but she swears by it.0 -
My hair's been thinning for 7 months after losing a bit of weight. Turns out I have anaemia.0
