Weaning sugar out of my coffee

Hi all, I did search for this topic but didn't find it, so if this is a double post sorry!

You coffee drinkers out there... need advice. I have to have my coffee in the morning, mostly so my co-workers can stay alive. But I can't drink it without a TON of sugar and cream. People have watched me make my coffee in the morning and asked if I'm trying to make a milkshake.

The amount of sugar and cream is detrimental to my goals. I want to try to wean the sugar and cream out of my coffee until I can drink it black, but I'm not sure how to do it. I hate the taste of black coffee, but I've been told it's an acquired taste.

Have you tried a flavored creamer? I don't put sugar in my coffee, the creamer is sweet enough for my taste.

I'm in the process of using less sugar. Basically, figure out what you do right now with your sugar and use half. Keep the creamer the same for now. At first it will taste bitter, but once you get to the last sip you won't remember!

After about a month, try half creamer. If it's too bitter you can wean it out more slowly.

For me, it's working. Hope it helps! Remember, you don't have to drink it black. I use 2 creamers and 1 tsp sugar and am pretty happy with only 35 calories in my coffee.

I measure my sugar and cream. So far I've been cutting out just 1g of sugar/week and leaving the cream at 2 TBSP. I'm trying to slowly decrease the sugar so I can acquire the new taste each week. I'm not worried about the cream, but I guess my plan, if I were, would be to slightly reduce the amount of cream once done decreasing the sugar. Hope that helps.

Try honey, stevia, almond milk, and/or coconut milk in your coffee. After a while, you won't want the sugar anymore. You either learn to love it black or with healthy additives.

Yes, that all helps. I use 5 spoonfuls of sugar and I don't know how much creamer. I'll start next week with 4 spoonfuls of sugar and a little less creamer and work my way down week by week. I hope it works because I would really rather drink it black and not have to worry about the calories from the sugar.

I used to drink my coffee with tons of sugar and flavored creamer. One day I just decided no more sugar and went cold turkey. I still use my flavored creamer you aren't taking that away from me but no more sugar. I would say it took about a week to get used to it and know it's no big deal.
  • That's what we call Japanese Milk Coffee - it's served cold in cans in Japan. It's how my son likes it too.

I suggest you take a Statics and Dynamics class for mechanical engineers. That will have you drinking coffee black in no time.

Seriously, there are some very light roasts available for Keurig machines. Try those.

I use vanilla protein powder. - it's not as creamy but the sweetness is there!

It may not be enjoyable at first but try it black without sugar for a week or two and see if your taste changes.

I went from coffee white with sugar to just black and now I couldn't imagine adding anything to it as I love the taste.
  • Have you tried a milk/espresso based drink? I find that I can drink a good latte or cappuccino without any sugar whereas I can't with regular coffee. (For reference, my idea of a good espresso is found nowhere near a Starbucks.)

I just checked to see the difference between black and how I'm drinking it now... WOW... 5 calories black, 288 for what I'm doing now.

Starting black on Monday. And I'll bloody well learn to like it.

I used to use flavored creamer and then went half and half. I didn't miss the extra flavor or calories. Although I do sometimes splurge for flavored creamer.

This sounds like a good plan. If it's the sweetness you like more than the cream, you can always try backing off on creamer first, then sugar. Even little changes can make a big difference in your weight loss. :drinker:

So...wean yourself off of it. Put a little less in your coffee every day. You don't have to do it all at once.

I think its easier to go straight to black and just get used to it! I did the same thing and then when I started looking at the calories I was consuming it was the first to go!! That was 4 years ago :) Good luck, you can do it!

Find yourself a nice flavored coffee you like and try that. I still use half and half in mine, but managed to get down to no sugar from drinking double doubles. I cut the sugar down gradually. Sometimes I use a splash of flavored creamer too. Not a lot though. Most of them are even too sweet now. It might take some time, but cutting back slowly will let your taste buds adjust.

I used to be a huge flavored creamer junkie. Now, I get a flavored coffee K-Cup (blueberry is my favorite!) I use So Delicious Original Coconut Milk Creamer (10 cal/Tbsp) and a little squeeze of stevia. That's not to say I don't have flavored creamer occasionally. I just decided it wasn't worth the 30-75 calories every single day!

I used to work in a coffee shop. When people switched to milk rather than cream in their coffee in an effort to be healthier they found it sweeter and cut back on a LOT of sugar on their future orders. A two cream and two sugar coffee became a two milk and one sugar coffee.

    Just a thought.

To wean off sugar in my coffee, I switched to using half and half, and then reducing the amount of sugar put in.

After a bit I drop off the amount of sugar to nil, then I switched from coffee to lattes, and the half and half to 2% milk.

Easy peezy. Just took a couple weeks.

You can get pumpkin spice coffee or hazelnut coffee for the keurigs they are very yummy and I only put one packet of stevia in each one with 1TBS of Coffee Mate Mocha Creamer. Its yummy
