It's not soccer it's football. The clue is in the name. It's a ball and you hit it with your foot. so football.
  • I liked it until the last 30 seconds of yesterday's game...grrr

then why do you guys use the term soccer still at times? like with your big charity event Soccer Aid?

    soccer and football are interchangeable.

I'm only excited because I bought 3 teams @ $5/team ... Now, the teams I'm excited for, let's just say only 1 has any kind of chance.

My blind pick teams (I would not have consciously chosen these teams...

Germany - My Obi-Wan Kenobi (my only hope)
Iran - They seem to have a good goalie...but that's about it.
Ghana - I have nothing nice to say about what I have seen from them so far.

I have Germany in my company sweepstakes too (as well as Costa Rica). Germany is not a bad pick, they are a decent team!! But you are pretty much on a loser with the other two lol

TBH I am not interested apart from that, I am English and our national team is an embarrasment.

I agree Germany is my only chance...

Don't worry, my friend Jay who chose England says in their last game they are going to score 10 goals... he has blind faith, but I am surprised at how poorly England has played at the WC.

I'm not a big soccer/football fan at all, but I do read up on things before I get involved.

Your friend might have faith....in what I don't know, because it seems he knows very little about modern soccer. To make ten goals in one match is the sign of anything but not a world class team. Excellent teams, which these days are trained using many tools and techniques that were not available 25-50 years ago make the shooting of ten goals ( I think that happened once for an hungarian team in the early 90's ) these days pretty much an unlikelihood. Brazil shoot four goals just a few days ago and Mexico three today and they both did extremely well. I would be willing to bet as teams fall by the wayside and only the very best survive, that seeing even five goals is not going to happen in this World Cup.
I also was surprised at England's performance. As a European who now lives in Mexico ( where soccer is the #1 sport ) I had higher expectations of the team and was really disappointed .

PS: I use the word " soccer ", because #1 I am not a native speaker of English and am not always up-to-date on the current usage of certain words and #2 because, if I say " football " too many people assume that I mean American football.

Did anyone else notice the Croatian player talking to the Mexican player? It looked like he was cussing at him in Spanish.

Couldn't care less about this kickball tournament

Then why bother putting your 2 cents in.

Personally, I have been DVRing every game. Watch what I consider to be the important ones and fast forward through the less critical ones.

Wife knows that I am going to be preoccupied every four years until the Cup concludes. I keep a list of all the games on my coffee table and update it after every game.

I've been playing soccer for the last 35 years. I'll be 60 next month and I'm still playing on two teams. One in a very competitive league and one in a less competitive league.

I've slowed down and had to move to Goalkeeper about 20 years ago, but I'll be playing until I drop or I can't contribute to the team anymore.

Nice to hear from an American ( I think that is what you are...sorry if I make assumptions ) who does not talk down on soccer without basically knowing nothing about it. And even better that you play the sport .
Even though I am a woman and still a handful of years older than you, I'd like to think that as a German I have a couple of football genes in my blood. Living in Mexico keeps them alive....lol..
I do the same as you and have a color coded chart on my coffee table also, because I also belong to a group of people who bet on the games, which is allowed for occasional betting here in Mexico, if the stake is no more than 500.- pesos/US$ 38.-.
We have 80 people paying just under 20 bucks ( 250 pesos ) and the winning are 80/20 %....that means the equivalent of 1200.- dollars for the #1 winner and 300.- dollars to place number two. We watch the final game together ( usually just under half of those who bet show up) and bring food/snacks/drinks according to the cuisine of those two teams.....and then it's over for another four years.

They said , according to Mexican sports news pretty much the same as they did in interviews before the match. Apart from nasty personal remarks ( which the Mexican media refuses in the spirit of the occasion not to broadcast and which most mexican players most likely did not understand ) was about how they would annihilate or murder Mexico and how they were used to get balls past better and bigger goalies than the mexican one. They also made fun of the Mexican players , because they are all shorter and most are slighter in build than the croatian ones. Very immature behavior imo.
Apart from the fact that I did root for Mexico ( my adopted country after working here for 18 years ) and still want to be fair; the on-field behavior of the Croatians did not impress me at all. I was also disappointed because it seemed that the referees overlooked a lot of croatian yellow card worthy behavior. I am however glad that they got at least what we call in Mexico an " honor goal " in.

Wow, that was worse than what I caught. I am doubly glad that Mexico won.
