  • Howdy! I am diabetic and when I was first diagnosed my diabetes educator gave me a pretty little plate that has suggested serving sizes and divides the plate. When I stick with it I lose weight and my sugar stays stable (and I feel good!). I also use the core plan from weight watchers which is how I lost a lot of weight before I had my now 3 year old son. The combo of the two helps me eat healthy and keep portion sizes in check so I don't have to count calories. I just don't do well counting, I play too many head games with myself, start to fill up on junk or forget the protein, eat too many carbs etc... This combo works for me but since it's kind of my own "made up" diet I don't always find buddies out there who understand. I love having some portion control plate buddies :)

Actually the Dollar General stores sell these 3-sectioned plates my nutritionist was telling me about. so the one side is a half and the other half side is split into two sections. The main side is for veggies, the one smaller for your meat portion and the other for a small carb or fruit--depending on what type eating protocol you follow. they're inexpensive. They are slightly smaller than a dinner sized plate, but it helped me get the idea of portion control when i was starting out.

I've been on Jenny Craig for a year now. The program is all about portion control. Their trays help you see what a portion actually is. However, the Healthy Choice and Lean Cuisine trays can be used the same way. Gone are the days that we can pile on our food, use 10 inch plates, and eat cereal out of a huge mixing bowl.

edorice I didn't know Jeanie Craig used portion control. Really I don't know anything about her program. Except you have to buy her food. Way to high for my budget..

I actually have saved the trays to use for dinner :) I figured I shouldn't use them over and over (probably some crazy BPA toxics or something) but sometimes I'll have a healthy choice for lunch and then save the tray and put my own home cooked dinner in there :) Works the same as my plate. The cool thing with the plate method is you really can have anything in proper portion and since you are eating so balanced you tend to not be as hungry. For me the hardest part is that I was so off on what I thought a proper serving of whole wheat pasta or brown rice was. When I first measured out my little serving of whole wheat pasta I was like "um, okay, that is about 1/10th of what i"d normally eat". BUT normally after I'd eat the huge portion my sugar would go crazy high, I would be hungry an hour later and munch all night. Now I know that I need to balance!

Elmet i made it to the dollor store and got me a set of thse divided plats. Seens pretty nice 2 for 3.00 dollors not bad. Think I will get some more so I can freeze some dinners,. lLook at the money I save and have meals to go. Thanks for the tip.
  • ahhh and I can post my day while I'm here :)

Breakfast: 1 hardboiled egg, mashed with 1/2 tbsp lite mayo, 1 whole wheat pita bread and 1 cup strawberries blended with 1 cup skim milk and some ice (my own little slushie).

Lunch: a bowl of chili - I make it balanced with about 3 oz of lean hamburger meat, 1/2 cup beans and corn (together) & tomatoes, 1 small box of raisins

Snack: slimfast high protein shake (I use my dairy leftover from my lunch and some of the calories since my breakfast is only like 260 to squeeze in this 200 calorie snack)

Dinner: oh dinner.... I don't know for sure. I am going bowling with my kids and could get a pizza for under $5 so they are having that. I'm debating between having that with just 1-2 slices (thin) and a salad before I leave home or if I should eat here first and have grilled salmon and a baked potato & salad and skip the pizza altogether. Debating. I want to have it planned before I leave the house rather then when the pizza is staring at me!

Snack: I'll have a lite low-sugar yogurt with some sliced peaches. (my milk and fruit from dinner)

Well, as brendakay said the entree's come in these black washable trays that are similar to the Lean Cuisine trays. Those trays help eye what a real portion size is. After awhile the whole program isn't really needed. MFP and self control is what works best.
