Has anyone swam Alcatraz?

how did it go? :)
I "escape" from the island on Saturday and I'm not sure what to expect current-wise.
is it a bad idea to not wear fins?

    I hear the current is very strong but I had no idea you could wear fins. If they let you, why not do it?

    Never have swam from Alcatraz, but I've been in the Bay Area water lots of times. Current is pretty strong, so I guess it depends on how strong a swimmer you are. And yes, that water is damn cold.

    Do they have rescue teams on the standby? Current looked pretty hectic when I was there. (NOT swimming)

    yeah not looking forward to the cold, but luckily the distance isn't so long that I'd have to worry about hypothermia! and okay I can definitely post how it went when I get back :flowerforyou:

    chrisdavey, yes there are kayaks and rescue teams... everyone in the event has to wear fluorescent swimcaps so that theyre easy to monitor haha
