Lately I have been seeing a lot of these virtual runs being posted.

Im wondering what they are all about.

Has anyone done one?

My treadmill has IFit which lets me choose route (or even draw one) and then I can see the route on the tablet in my treadmill. It uses Google maps so I can see a street view as I run or walk. The treadmill automatically changes incline based on the terrain. Is that what you are talking about?

Virtual runs are online organized "runs" that people sign up for and pay for. You are then free to complete the prescribed distance at your leisure... training runs, double dipping another race.

They often involve a medal of some sort and an emailed "bib" you can print out.

I've never done one myself... I don't feel quite right collecting swag for doing training runs I ought to be doing anyway. But that is just my personal preference.
