Weight Loss & Exercise for Seniors

I need motivation to eat more food. It is so easy to skip a meal. The mindset for a lot of people is to not eat and lose weight.
Also, some of the exercises and weight tips are for younger people. I am not that flexibile and don't want to injure myself
exercising. I would appreciate any tips or goals that you have reached by eating and exercising healthy!!! :glasses:

Over 55 and ready to get healthy!!! they say it's never too late!!!!!

Unfortunately, the mindset for a lot of people has been influenced by weight loss myths. Although meal timing doesn't affect weight loss, people still need to eat enough to ensure they are getting the proper amount of nutrients while maintaining a deficient. The best exercise is the one you enjoy doing and will stick to for the long haul. It also depends on your goal. Cardio burns fat. Weight lifting burns fat along with preserving muscle mass. Youtube is a great place to check on exercise forms.

Don't use age as a barrier for doing exercise. I know a lot of people over 55 who bike, swim, run, and walk plus weight lift. The key is to start slow and add on as you go. I use a fitbit to monitor my steps/miles. I am 55, will be 56 in a couple of days. I mostly walk everyday early in the morning. The dessert heat here is a killer. It will be 110 today. Good luck on your journey.

Hi, almost 57 here, I can relate to what you are saying. Specially being a woman and having gone throught menopause, I can say that altought I do not feel limited by my age, that my needs are not the same as when I was 40.

That being said, I had to recalculate my calorie needs since they have decreased as I am moving on in years. A decrease in calorie needs will usually translate in less appetite. Except that I did not adjust accordingly and gained weight. I can say that I was eating without being hungry and the wrong type of food.

If you want to know what is the amount of calories you need to maintain or loose you need to find one that take your gender and age jn consideration and keep in mind that those are only estimate. To loose weight I take the tdee that I have set as couch potato and use 75% of that number. All activities such as walking etc I keep track separatly.

Exercise for me, walking at a good pace, dancing such as zumba and what I love Bollywood style. I also have a pool and do lots of water exercises, all those are gentle to my joints that somehow dont like me that much. Also note that most sites do not give accurate calorie burned throught exercises and that is why I do not eat them back since the margin between gaining, loosing and maintaining is small in my case.

Like you meal skippjng is a problem and usually contribute to me overeating at night because I am hungry like crazy.

At night I prepare myself a bowl of greek yogourt with oatmeal and berries, it is a reminder to eat ehen I open the fridge to get the milk for my coffee to eat.

Lunch is pretty light I love dips so I use hummus with raw veg or I make one with greek yogourt a little garlic and fresh herbs. Both of these things are ready in the fridge since I prepare a batch once a week.

At night I cook an healtier version of classic food and portion control what I eat.

    Hope this helps you

Walk, swim, bike. I am 74 and jogging/running is probably out for me, but I walk every day. I'm up to 3 mph sustained, and even though that is considered a moderate pace, for me it is pretty brisk. I also do strength training at the gym, and while I constantly set the machines to much lower weights than the jocks who used the machine before me, I am only comparing myself to what I was able to do a month ago, and strive for personal bests. There is no age limit to fitness, and even though our metabolism has slowed down, there is no age limit to healthy living.:flowerforyou:

    I agree.

I'm 60. Getting older pretty much sucks. A lot of me doesn't work like it used to. I used to stop lifting weights when my muscles fatigued. Now I quit when one of my joints feels like its on the brink of injury.

But I've seen what happens when you sit on the sidelines. A few years ago I was having trouble just getting up a flight of stairs because of my knees. Regular exercise has pretty much eliminated the problem, although I have to be careful when doing squats.

I only have one body, and it feels better when I exercise. So I'll keep exercising as long as I am able.
