Anyone See 'Catfish'?

Hello! Gershwyn the resident fim geek here. Just wondered if anyone had seen the new social-media documentary, 'Catfish'. Certainly lots to discuss, but we can keep this spoiler-free if you like. For the record, I think it's fake.
I took it to be true only because, well, heck, it's the Internet and there's all sorts of ppl out there that do crazy things. BUT once they began to unravel a bit more of it on sites and reviews it got me to wondering as well how much was true and if it truly was factual. Some of it did seem stage and I couldn't figure out if I started thinking that because of all the reviews I was reading felt that or it had holes in it.
Curious on your thoughts... or if you want to do a PM so as not to 'spoil' it for anyone wanting to see it I'm fine with that as well:flowerforyou: Just interested in hearing from someone that's actually seen the film.0 -
Without spoilers, the main issues that are leading me to doubt are threefold.
One, what reason did they really have to be filming in the first third of the film? Interest in the young girl painter? Hardly seems a reason to base a documentary on.
Two, the main focus of the film was a curious mix of, "Film me! Film me!" and grumpy reluctance. He talked about being "bullied" into the documentary, and yet was smiling 95% of the time, even while discussing the most personal and embarassing stuff, when he should have been the least willing.
Three, the main woman in the film was far too willing to bask in the humilation of her tricks being figured out. If you were caught doing something so innately creepy and emotionally slimy, would you be OK with three guys with cameras going on and on about it?0 -

I was so surprised she even did an interview after supposedly being involved in something so " innately creepy and emotionally slimy" as you put it. It's hard to imagine someone that did that for real being so willing to be so open to being interviewed. Money seems sure to have exchanged hands on that one, I don't know how it all came down but it certainly did get big time media hype! . I don't know...the whole thing was a bit creepy and planned out a bit too much to be believable and I haven't even seen the full film.
Yes he seemed to be quite open on the personal matters such as time with the gf and I agree a bit strange continuing a friendship with a young painter. Well, the whole thing being filmed?? I agree a bit much to have the camera on at all times?:frown:
I had thought of watching it on Netflix but other than that the interview showed much of the story and the strangeness of it all.
Thanks for your input, interesting:drinker:0
