5:2 is based on caloric restriction just like any other successful diet. The only difference is instead of a mild to moderate restriction each day, it calls for eating at maintenance most of the week and cramming all of your caloric deficit into 2 days. You will not lose weight any faster than any other eating plan with an equivalent weekly deficit. As far as "can you eat what you want on non fast days", sure you can. You can also eat what you want on any other diet - you just have to keep your overall caloric intake in check. You will still have to do that on 5:2, you can't just gorge yourself for 5 days a week and expect to lose weight.0

At the end of the week if you do the diet correctly you will have the same deficit either way. So if you are at a plateau it might be worth a try but in general it's going to be just as effective as splitting up your deficit over 7 days instead of just 2.0
