how to choose the best option from the food diary

I am looking to lose another 12lbs (152-140), I am 5'5. It definitely gets harder the close I get and I am trying to be as accurate as possible with my diary. I am looking for tips on choosing the best option from the food diary. I read a topic about not using any entry with an * next to it and also avoiding anything generic or listed as homemade. However, even when I looked for grilled chicken breast this morning I couldn't find any entries that didn't have asteriks. Am I searching wrong? I want to be as accurate as possible. I am aiming for net 1400 per day. How do you track accurately when you aren't eating packaged foods? I have been weighing and measuring so I know my weights are at least correct.

Thank you!

Try typing Chicken - white meat (define skinless/boneless) and you should be able to find it and if that doesn't work edit one of the existing entries...from the USDA website

Yes, this is what I use for chicken. Then I add any oil or marinade separately.

Side note, I eat 1400ish per day (1300-1600) and lots of chicken and other such things if you want to add me.

    Yep, what Stef said.

I usually start with the base food or food type. For example, for Salmon, I type in "Fish, salmon, farmed" to get the USDA version and I can pick the raw or baked version. For most of my meat, I type in the meat type then the cut and then raw.

Just type in chicken breast raw. Add oil or anything else separate.
No generic or look for choices that have 2 or more confirmations.
My goal is also 140 lbs maybe 138.... We will see.

I admire your dedication and precision. I leave some margin (uneaten calories) in order to bypass these accuracy headaches.

I'm sorry to butt in but what does a * mean?

the * asterisk means it was entered by a random MFP user, the nutritional data is unverified and you have no way of knowing exactly how accurate it is. An entry with NO asterisk is the "official" MFP entry, although I've found a few that are off so I still double check against outside sources (USDA database, etc)
