I'm not vegan, but I try to be as close to that as I can. I've heard beans are an excellent source of veggie protein!

    Tofu
    Beans
    Nuts
    Seeds
    Spirulina
    Green Veggies
    Soy Milk
    Almond Milk
    Quinoa
    Lentils
    Tempeh
    Sprouted breads
    Vegan "meats"
Vegan Protein Powder (Vega is a good one)

Lots of ways to get your protein without meat.

Ignore protein. It is the biggest myth. A human infant will increase in size 300% on mothers milk which is around 4.5% protein by calories. You will never grow faster than this in your entire life. You don't need more protein than this. If you eat whole-foods, you will get plenty of protein. Even a 100% fruit diet will get you 7% or 8% protein very easily.

My personal experience is that I went from 250 pounds down to 155 pounds very quickly eating a high raw vegan diet. I started working out very intensely because I then had the energy after losing all that weight. I gained 30 pounds of muscle very quickly eating the same high carb, low protein, low fat, high raw, mostly fruit diet. Some people call it an 80-10-10 diet, but I was probably closer to 85% carbs, and a split between the fat and protein in the other 15%.

The ONLY thing that will keep or build muscle is to stress the muscle. If you think your muscles are becoming soft, it may be that you are losing intramuscular fat which makes the muscle look flatter. Or, if you have lost weight and you do not increase your activity level, you will lose muscle. Your body maintains muscle based on the physical demands your exert on those muscles. Weighing less means less stress, therefore, the body determines it can drop the muscle that isn't being used.

I have not discovered a single whole-food that lacks protein.

I'm vegan, and proteins aren't problem.
It's better if you care about the iron.

yup i'm vegan too :D i agree that stressing the muscle is a bit more important than having enough protein. stressing the muscle is the only way the body makes the muscles get bigger/firmer. i do get most of my protein from nuts, soy/tofu, beans, lentils, quinoa, and a vegan protein shake (garden of life is a great one) if i need a bit more. usually, though, i don't focus too too much on protein and am okay if MFP shows i was short like 15g of protein. focus more on strength training, and that will help get your muscles firmer (and bigger if you want).
