Thyroid help!

Quick question about my thyroid. I have been treated in the past by an endocrinologist for hyperthyroidism. I am currently off meds but have been told by him that due to family history my thyroid problem could return as hypothyroidism. In the past year or so, despite attempting to lose weight, I have gained almost 20 pounds mostly in my stomach area. I really lack energy and always feel tired. I asked my endocrinologist to run blood tests again, I checked the results of my bloodwork and although most of my levels are "normal" my T3 is low. He said he reviewed them and did not think the low T3 was enough to warrant medication. I am at my wits end trying to figure out why I can't lose weight. I did some of my own research and people have stated they too have only a low T3 and fought for medication. I have also seen online where you can buy over the counter thyroid medication, has anyone ever tried this?? Anyone else with thyroid issues that can help??

Hi! I continue to have my thyroid tested (every 6 months) and my doctor also won't medicate. One of my levels went from top end of the range to the bottom. I'm not sure which level it was though. Meanwhile I gained 40 pounds. I just went for another round of testing and will get my results on Monday. I've gained the weight in my stomach (I keep getting asked if i'm pregnant - so not cool). My doctor says that weight gain in the stomach could be from high cortisol levels - the stress hormone. You can get tested for that, although my doctor never does that test??? I'm going to ask him why at the next appointment.

A friend of mine had her thyroid removed and told me to change my doctor. She said that you can be within the range, but it isn't your "normal." There are doctors who will let you play with dosages until you feel like yourself again. That's going to be my next step.

I wish I could be more help! :flowerforyou:

I have Hashimoto's (autoimmune thyroid disease), and I lost way more slowly than most MFPers. But I did it just like everybody else—by logging everything I eat & drink accurately & honestly.
