So I want to buy my daughter a bike. She's going to out grow it in 2 years. She has a little brother.

Do I make my daughter, who's favorite color is purple, ride a blue bike?

Or do I make my son, who's favorite color is green, ride a bike pink?

The bike in question only comes in pink or blue. No black, yellow, orange, or something more neutral.

Why dont you ask your daughter is she likes blue and then buy her a purple basket, seat, tassels (for handlebars), purple helmet, etc. to decorate it in her favorite color since it doesnt come in her favorite color,, then when your son gets it, you can take off decorations and put on boy decorations he likes

As a little girl, I would have preferred the blue bike. With purple being her favorite color, I can't see her being too heartbroken over a blue bike instead of a pink one. Have any links to the bike?

    OK, let's!
The 70s sucked because pink was rarely offered in anything
other than Barbie. I opted for blue. Guess Blue gets second
    standing.

This is the boys (but as I realized shortly after posting it, it does come in the white and red):

This is the girls, which comes in white and purple too:

Oh and right now he has a blue Strider, but he will soon be riding this lovely thing (but he's 3 and doesn't care yet, and the tassels have been pulled off long ago).

I'd buy the bike your son wants. Then sell it when he outgrows it. Then buy the bike your daughter wants when the time comes.

Name brand bikes hold their value very well so you wouldn't lose a lot I wouldn't think.

ETA: Reverse what I said as I had who was oldest mixed up. Same thing applies though.

Along the same lines, have you looked on Craigslist for gently used kids bikes?

i second the spray paint comment. It's fun to DIY and personalize stuff. Also could be a cool project to work on with the kiddos!

Nothing great on there right now but I'll keep my eye on it.

Spray painting it would probably hurt the resale value.

Not if it doesn't look horrible when you're done.

Spray painting is pretty easy to do without screwing up.

My daughter came home one day and said that boys can't wear pink or purple (she was 3). Oh yeah? So I showed her pictures online of boys that did. She also tried saying boys can't wear dresses. Hehe. Oh the good times we had googling that one. She also said her teacher at school (private Christian school) said that the girls can't play with cars, only boys can. Guess who sent her to school the next day with like 10 toy cars to share with all her friends?

ETA: I don't discourage what she likes though. She's the girliest girl with her dresses and accessories and fake makeup. But if she wants to go roll in the dirt with her boy buddies, I encourage that as well.

I'm shopping for mountain bikes for a 8 year old and a 6 year old girls (and eventually for the now 3 year old boy). Not exactly cramming them into traditional roles. It was the bike manufacturer who I thought was making me chose gender specific coloring (or so I thought before I discovered the more neutral options). Currently the 6 year old girl is on a blue bike, and soon the 3 year old boy will be on a pink bike.
