I keep reading about all of the 5X5 programs and how that it the "best way" to start lifting to gain muscle.
Can you start with some free weights to begin with with (those I have at home and gym) rather than the 5x5?

You can start with DB, the problem is, this program is progressive based, therefor, you would need a good amount of DB's. With a BB, adding weight (resistance) is a lot easier.
The 5 x 5, just refers to the amount of sets and reps. 5 sets of 5 reps for the exercise as your "working sets"0
