Dogs

I know I'm going to get a lot of hate for this... but I wanted to see if there's anyone out there (especially you cat lovers) that also don't particularly enjoy the company of dogs.

I'm a cat lover. I love their independence, the fact that they are for the most part self-cleaning, light-weight etc.

When it comes to dogs though, I just can't stand being around ones that are especially unruly. The only dog I had growing up was a Pekingese which I loathed with a passion. The damn thing barked at EVERYTHING that moved and crapped anywhere it wanted to.

Anyways, that's not to say that I dislike ALL dogs. Some dogs are very well behaved and I appreciate that very much, I just could never own one.

Some things I particularly dislike about many dogs are

Barking (excessively)
Jumping at or on me (this is especially a pet peeve!)
Slobbering or drooling / licking my leg YUCK!
Dogs tend to smell terrible if they aren't taken care of properly

Anyways, that's the end of my list anyways. Queue the hate :-)

Dogs truly are a man's (or woman's) best friend. Got three myself. I used to have a cat, but he wasn't very friendly.

I prefer cats myself. All the ones I've had were absolutely affectionate and loving.
Thats not to say that I don't like dogs. I don't mind them, I just prefer the feline variety.

dog lover here ;) Funny that you post this on a fitness website but a lot of dogs that smell bad usually have a poor diet! I feed my dog really good food and she smells fantastic at a rate of about 1 or 2 baths a year.

I love dogs but am in the boat with you that I can't stand dogs that people didn't spend time training. Yappy dogs also irritate me.

I love my pit bull puppy! She's definitely NOT going to be unruly though. I am in the process of training her and working on her manners. Don't blame the dog, blame the owner!

Op I get where you're coming from but not all dogs act like that. My husky acts more like a cat half the time. My german shepherd only barks at delivery people or strangers / animals coming near the house. He's a great crime deterrant. Both are well trained and don't jump on people or get on furniture. I'll also note that different breeds have different characteristics / tempermants too. But I like cats too. ;)

Sounds like your dog could have benefitted from a little discipline and training...

My dogs are my favorite workout buddies. I also have a cat and she's a kickass master squirrel hunter.

i get equally pissed off and both my cats and my dogs..... cats are so freaking moody and scratch up my stuff sometimes and the puppy (yes granted she is still young) is SO rowdy and still pees in the house sometimes. she needs to hurry up and catch on to the whole house training stuff. its gotten a LOT better but lemme tell you how frustrating it is to work 12 hours to come home to that smell.....

Our dog is the biggest motivation for exercise! Guaranteed 30 minute daily rip around the neighborhood! Even if we don't feel like it, he'll talk us into it.

Not sure what your housing situation is but if you have a house and yard, a doggy door is going to be your best friend once you get this puppy trained. It's sooooo much easier once they are used to the doggy door. As to the house training itself, I've had different experiences with each of my dogs. Husky too months to train, GSD only took a couple of weeks.

As a dog trainer I can understand where you're coming from.

As an owner I would be on disability without my Border collie (aka service dog). He predicts my migraines so I can take the right meds before I end up debilitated for 3-4 days.

Depending on the pup's age remember they don't have the bladder developed to hold it 12 hours all the time and will still get excited and have accidents and need to go immediately after waking and probably eating. If you don't want to use a crate you can always try a doggie diaper.

I don't like domesticated animals. IF I *had* to "own" an animal, it would be an animal I could keep outdoors 100% of the time and it would find its own food. In my back yard I have squirrels, robins, hummingbirds, and all sorts of wildlife that lives there and comes to visit me every afternoon when I sit on my deck with my tea. They live their lives, I live mine, and we enjoy each others company living in harmony.

But IN my house... HELL NO. Humans are the only animals allowed in my house.

Oh then you'd love my little guy. He's quiet, doesn't jump unless invited to, doesn't drool or slobber or lick (unless you ask for a kiss). He smells clean.

The only bad habit he has is biting but that's not on your list.

edited to add: oh and my puppy is a GSD

shes 5 months now. been taking her out on a leash and crate training her and i do see a lot of improvement but there is still the occasional accident

i am going to try and see if i can get a doggy door. i'm not sure how much it costs and what will fit and all that. I have a back slider and a fenced in yard but my older dog likes to dog out and pulls slats off the fence to get out if we don't watch her :noway:

i don't leave her alone for 12 hours, there are people there that take her out

i would not have even considered getting a puppy if i had to do that.

It's not the dogs the OP doesn't like... It's the owner. The OP likes owners who place a high importance on training and obedience, which many dog owners do. Others love letting their dogs just be dogs.

Same can be said for kids... If you don't like loud, obnoxious, selfish, dirty, unruly kids... It's not the kids you don't like, it's the parents.
  • Hmmmm.... Should have named this thread "Cat lovers that dislike dogs." Instead you named it "dogs" so now all the dog lovers are gonna come here and be like, "excuuuuuse me?!?!" False advertising!!! ;)

It comes down to the owner. I have three dogs (two large, one medium) and they are very well behaved. Because I have three, thay HAVE to be, or I'd go crazy! They are mostly indoor dogs and are trained to be obedient and well-behaved. They are not permitted to jump up on people (unless requested by command) and are very sweet and affectionate. They are also protective and since I work alone from home, they are great security for me.

I like cats well enough, but will probably never own one (especially since the hubby does NOT like them). Dogs just give me joy, and since I'm at home working, they are my companions. They go running with me, provide entertainment - and, they actually sing with me! Literally... (Which is a problem when I teach voice lessons!! But so cute otherwise)

Dogs are fantastic - they bring such joy and lift my mood every day!!!

I grew up with dogs and no cats.... I always thought cats were aloof and unfriendly... until I lived in a place I couldn't have dogs. I got my first cat.

No going back. Cats are so clean, easy to care for, and both my boys are so loveable and affectionate.

Now I find the smell of dogs offensive, they are always after attention, and are too needy.

and when it comes to being a loyal and loving pet, dogs will win every single time. cats, they just "meh" you pretty much.
