What are some good beginner tips for lifting? How many reps? Specific exercises, etc.? Thanks!

I started lifting with a trainer about 8 weeks ago. we do 3 sets of 12 on everything. Start off not overdoing yourself. especially being a beginner....exercises will vary by what you want to work out. Pick what days of the week you will do legs, arms, shoulders, etc and then search for free weight exercises to do for those body parts. if you can complete all 12 reps without feeling exausted or having a hard time finishing you might want to go up some. Again just dont overdo it. Im hooked on kettle bells too. I love them and can do so much with them. good luck!!!

I started Stronglifts 7 weeks ago. I deadlifted 180# today. I've lost inches everywhere. My scale hasn't budged. So make sure you take measurements. Do NOT let the # on the scale bother you. Just keep checking measurements. The scale will start dropping.

Look into Stronglifts 5x5, I'm doing that now and it's a great beginner program. Only 3 compound lifts 5 reps 5 sets 3x week.
Also, New Rules of Lifting for Women is a great resource, although I found their lifting program a bit complicated to follow.
  • Bump! Starting this also!

Picking the weight up generally helps.

here is a fitness program picker: http://www.rohitnair.net/pp/#muscle_gain/strength/beginner

KNOW: most barbell lifts can be substituted with dumb bells or practiced with your own body weight.
ALSO: youtube is great for form observations.
Do not be afraid to accept criticism.

I follow Starting Strength. Similar to Stronglifts but with a few difference. The book is a great reference for form even if you don't follow it.
  • Great start is the book "New Rules of Lifting for Women"

    Here's what I did....

I read the book New Rules of Lifting for Women (lots of good info in there even if you do not do that program).

I did 3 months of that program and then I switched to Nia Shanks workouts. I like her message. (Google her)

But any of the other programs mentioned by the others are fine too.
