Strength Training?

I would like to start strength training with free weights at home to supplement my hiking, as I believe this will be the best way to get the body I want and see tone and muscle definition. I have used weights in the past but its obvious by what I am reading that they were not heavy enough.
I have been looking on the internet for a basic routine I can build on, but there's so much its getting a little confusing.
Does anyone know a link for a good routine or recommend some basic exercises they began with. So far I am looking for exercises that incorporate lots of muscle groups, so planks, deadlifts, lunges and squats is what I want to include so far. However in terms of reps, and how often etc, I am pretty unsure?
Thanks
