i can't stop eating!

I changed my eating over 10 years ago. Now when I binge it's not thousands of calories in junk food and sweets. However, I can't stop eating (even though I'm not hungry) tonight. A glass or two of wine and I'm downing a large bag of pea pods with Greek yogurt dip. I'm about 700 calories over for today.

Hope you enjoyed those pea pods and yogurt.

Don't be too hard on yourself. We all go over sometimes. Tomorrow is a new day,

Go take a walk...it will not only get you away from the food, it can also improve your mood.

And keep in mind: your calorie goal is probably around 500 calories below the amount you burn every day. If you eat 700 over your goal, then you're really only eating 200 over your burn...you basically just wiped out your deficit for today, and maybe a little of yesterday's. So, you haven't derailed or ruined anything at all...you just delayed reaching your goal by a day, day and a half or so.

Earlier this evening I went for a bike ride after eating my bowl of ice cream 3 hours earlier than usual. Then I had air popped popcorn. Man, I just can't stop today. Slipping up and having deep dish pizza for lunch has really caused a relapse. I swear I haven't had deep dish in over a decade.

OK, a couple minutes of jumping jacks since it's 11:30 pm and raining.

Deep dish pizza sounds lovely! I wonder if you would have had the same issue if you'd just allowed yourself a reasonable amount of deep dish pizza on a regular basis? It seems like it's the things we normally deny ourselves that set us up for a binge. I'm the same way with certain pizzas...I won't even buy large pizzas any more, and will only get them if I have someone to share with...that way, at most I'll eat half a medium, and that's manageable.

I went to a training and deep dish and desserts was all they had. I normally make my own healthy pizza. I also had two cookies. I'm sliding down the slippery slope. It started with my hubby's bday cake on vacation. Cake every day for a week was fine because I was swimming, walking and kayaking like crazy. I come back home and think I can manage the calories and splurge a little on only 2 slices of pizza instead of 5 slices and two cookies instead of the entire dessert display. Then I come home and start binging on blueberries, pea pods, and tons of healthy foods.

Agreed, I've seen multiple posts of yours (OP) talking about added sugar and carbs being bad and instructing others to cut them out. I think you may have an easier time if you stop thinking like that. Upping my carbs has helped me. Personally I don't really see any reason to eat low carb if you're just going to end up binging on them anyways.

Great news, I only gained .8 pounds AND I woke up HUNGRY.

Normally after eating purchased regular crust pizza I'm at least 4 pounds heavier the next day. Of course we all know that's not true weight gain but no other foods up the scale more than pizza for me - not even salty margaritas and chips. I think the big difference was the timing of eating the pizza. I ate an entire day's worth of calories at lunch without it being sustainable nutrition and fiber to make it through until bedtime. My body processing all the pea pod fiber and weight reducing calcium and protein rich Greek yogurt in my sleep made me hungry in the morning. Hunger in the morning never happens to me.

Thanks for the advice for the walk. I think my jumping jack really made a huge difference in not only stopping me from eating more but keeping the excess weight off. Are you familiar with Tabatas? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/High-intensity_interval_training
Granted, intense exercise at midnight is not conducive to quickly falling asleep, but it's a lazy Sunday morning now and I'm heading for a swim.

As far as I know, I've read that alcohol can make you hungry and also choose the wrong food choices .
  • Ha ha. Thats nothing. Check out what I did last night. The added calories were red velvet cake. Or if you want to really get freaked out check out what I did last weekend, I believe I had an almost 4000 calorie day. Still lost half a pound this week. Some pea pods and yogurt ain't nothing. You may have some disordered thinking about food me thinks. I go over by some yogurt and pea pods daily...not literally, but you know what I mean. Do five minutes of jumping jacks if your so worried.

This has happened to me so many times. I find especially when I drink alcohol, I end up eating a bunch of things that I wouldn't normally. Not out of hunger but just because it tastes good... My best advice is to log it and move on.

Bet it's water retention and not actual weight.

It's the whole lifestyle change (over a decade now). Yes, I have issues with food and decades of literally stuffing myself. Now I can splurge on some unhealthy foods but when I want to stuff myself I do it with healthy foods. I'm really quite proud of myself, especially asking for help. Had I not posted last night, I probably would have had more wine, not put the food away and started after the ice cream. Of course not having lots of bad foods in the house helps keep me from losing control.

And as part of a total lifestyle change, one might not want to label foods into categories of good vs. bad is where I would concentrate my efforts to make a change... There is no such thing, Are there foods that are more nutritious than others? certainly but there is nothing wrong with any foods, unless a.) you have a medical condition which would be affected by eating certain foods. or b.) You just flat out don't like a particular food.... Working the things you like into your meal plan will allow greater success long term in my opinion... I look forward to a bowl of ice cream every evening.... Just my 2 cents..... Best of Luck...

OP your profile states you are a professional speaker on healthy eating & diet. What advice would you give to others?

I'm not being snarky sometimes its hardest to follow our own advice! However I'm pretty sure you'd discuss coping strategy in your own talks. I'm a chronic binger for me I set my daily cals higher than the 1200 MFP recommended. But slightly lower than TDEE. I log my burns as 1 & when I binge or go over 9/10 times I will go over somewhat. It generally balances the book over the course of a week & I'm still losing consistently.

You need to figure out what works for YOU.

There are no "bad" foods. Quite vilifying specific things and maybe you won't binge. Every time I see someone around here who complains about these things, there is always the idea of "bad" and "good" foods.

What advice would I give others? Ask for help to keep you in check because yes it is hardest to follow our own advice. My coping strategy is if I'm going to binge, it's going to be on something nutrient dense and low calorie. If I'm going to splurge on calorie dense and nutrient poor food, I control the portions.

My advice is exactly the same as yours, "You need to figure out what works for YOU." If I splurge too much on BAD (directed at other poster) foods, it is a slippery slope. I think almost everyone would agree that cocaine is BAD. If processed carbs are an addiction that leads to out of control behavior and moderation doesn't work, then it is BAD for you. Not everyone but the addicted person.

Hello. My name is Sandra. I am new to this. I only have been on the diet plan my Dr gave me for 5 days. I know what you are going through. I love sweets especially chocolate and cheetos was my downfall. I would get up in the middle of the night and eat cheetos or something sweet. It was like a clock in my head saying Sandra get up and eat when I wasn't even hungry. I have followed a plan where I really do not have to count calories. My Dr said I can have up to 200 grams of carbs a day and 60 grams of protein a day. I now use a half cup measuring cup to measure out my food. I keep granola bars and vanilla wafers in the house for something sweet. I weighed 356 pounds 5 days ago. I weighed this morning and I weigh 342 pounds. I also do 40 leg lifts and 40 arm lifts a day. That is about all I can do at this point. I am 52 and have caregivers. My life is sitting in the recliner watching TV and playing on computer. I prayed to God please give me the strength to do this and he has. I wish you the best and know you can do this. You don't have to eat foods that taste terrible. I had the other day a baked pork chop 1/2 cup kraft mac/cheese and 1/2 cup potatoes and 1 roll. I had a granola bar for a snack that night. I think I am losing the weight because I no longer get up at night to eat and do not keep candy or cheetos in the house. Best of luck and always say I deserve to have a better quality of life and I deserve to be happy. God Bless

So true, the majority of my blips are wine induced.
