coughing while running?

I just started running last week (okay, more of a pitiful, gaspy jog) and I always find myself needing to cough for a few minutes afterwards. This never happens during the run, only after. I know it COULD be athletic asthma but I don't have any chest constrictions or a hard time breathing, and I never seem to have this problem when I do other excersises. So is it normal for an overweight amateur runner to be coughing like this and will it go away as I become more adept at running?

i used to have a similar problem, but i also had mild childhood asthma so i may not be any help. i attributed it to irritation in my windpipe from the extra breathing that i wasnt used to, but this could be totally wrong its only my own speculation

Are you running outdoors? Could it be that you're breathing in more pollen since you're breathing heavier? The pollen is so bad this year that I've experienced that dry cough due to allergies...and I've never had that happen before.

This, the pollen is so bad that my once black car is now practically yellow. Sat out in the sun for about half an hour the other day and my phone was covered in the crap, it's awful but I'm assuming that's what the problem is as well.

I've been running indoors, but it's in my old dusty basement so maybe it is allergens

If I push myself during a run, I cough for several hours afterwards, and sometimes into the next morning. It sounds like a smoker's cough, but I don't smoke (and never have). I've never been tested for asthma. I do have some allergies, so it could be related to that. I am no help whatsoever for you, but you aren't alone.

I run about 2x a week, and I'm not too overweight. I don't know what causes it, as I have been running & workout out for a couple years and still have this issue. My gym partner sneezes uncontrollably after running, so we're just a mess after running lol.

My money says that a corticosteroid inhaler would clear that cough right up.

My daughter is a runner and has asthma that is completely under control, however, there are still times she gets a coughing fit after a hard race. Except for the cough she doesn't have any symptons you would expect from asthma. She keeps her inhaler with her and uses it a few times after a race and within 15 mins she is usually fine. She has also (at the doctor's recommendation) started to use her inhaler before race and that seems to help also.
