Protein after workout

Hello all,

Finally joined the gym and started working out, the program the PT gave me is good mix of cardio, weights and a good core workout using a gym ball at the end.

I do this 4 times a week, swimming on 2 days and have I complete day off.

I have seen loads of people using protein shakes etc. At the end of their workout, what's this all about?

Can anyone explain it me? Should I be doing it?

There is a pervasive belief in a 'catabolic window' for roughly an hour after exercise when the muscles want/need a protein spike, like from a protein shake. While I still see some studies supporting this belief, the majority I have read have been dismissed as largely based in bro-science. Most studies I have read indicate that, for most people, merely getting sufficient protein throughout the day (1g - 1.3g protein/ pound of Lean Body Mass) is sufficient, with meal timing having no appreciable impact.

EDIT: Congratulations on deciding to join a gym; I hope it helps you achieve your goals.
